I 'VE NEVER QUITE UNDERSTOOD THIS PRODUCTION OF MUCUS BUSINESS ! . = FIRST ,THE MEDICS TELL US THAT A CERTAIN SMALL AMOUNT OF MUCUS IS PRODUCED FROM BIRTH = TO PROTECT THE LUNGS - OK . SECOND , - AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE FOLKS ! , = WHY THE HELL DO THE LUNGS PRODUCE TONS OF THE DAM STUFF = AFTER WE HAVE STOPPED SMOKING ? .... - BIT LATE IN THE DAY - AIN'T IT ? , AND MORE IMPORTANTLY , = WHATS THE POINT ? WHEN , WE HAVE STOPPED DAMAGING OUR LUNGS BY SMOKING , ? ...= BIT LIKE THE FEET PRODUCING BLISTERS LONG AFTER WE HAVE STOPPED RUNNING IN BARE FEET ! ......THIS WHOLE BLOODY BUSINESS IS A MEDICAL CONTRADICTION !....- I UNDERSTAND THAT IN MANY CASES , THE LIVER CAN AND DOES " REPAIR " ITSELF AFTER BEING GIVEN A BASHING WITH ALCOHOL - SO WHY NOT THE LUNGS ?.......AND FINALLY , ALL THE PEOPLE I KNOW WITH RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES HAVE SAID ....... " WE NEVER PRODUCED , OR HARDLY ANY MUCUS , WHEN WE WERE SMOKING - SO WHY NOW WHEN WE HAVE STOPPED ..?.........= " BIT LATE IN THE DAY IS'NT IT ? " ........THAT'S MY DAILY MOAN FOLKS ! .... GOODLY DAY ! ...

The reason why we do is that when we smoke it suppresses the little hairs (cilia) inside the lungs. Once we stop they come to life again and start doing their job by clearing the lungs, thus lots of mucus.

Any damage already done can't be undone but it helps stop more damage occurring. x

The body has to work really hard to try and repair damage that we do. Our lungs have lots to cope with too especially smoking and pollution.

Pete’s lungs and airways are scarred and damaged and he produces copious amounts of mucus. It’s just how it goes.

Hope you’re ok but I understand your frustration. Xxxx

Do you drink water? Have you tried a naturopath? Mine has given me a natural expectorant and I’m drinking up to 3litres a day and it really helps.

What is the natural expectorant ldrink at least 10 glasses of fluid per day but am constantly going to the toilet

Do you drink coffee as it is a diuretic and like expel all liquid you drink. Nothing works on lungs the same as water so I drink at least 4 500ml glasses a day plus my one or two small cups of fresh coffee in the morning and fruit tea anytime. If I don’t. My lungs seem to dry up and I can’t have a productive cough.

I will see if I can find out exactly what she uses in my tonic. I am also finding ‘hot’ foods like watercress, ginger, horseradish, radish, wasabi are helping with no wheat, dairy or soy and sugar. Apparently sugar is our worst enemy as it produces LOADS of mucus.

If your drinking substantially enough water and peeing too much, you need to take minerals. I take a ionic liquid mineral supplement that I put 1 tbsp in 1 glass of water a day.

Hi Help 61.When I was in a Sanatoriam years ago there was no way of getting the phlegm up so they used to make you hang over a bed with your head near the floor and they would slap you on the back to make you bring the phlegm up they also put a container full of hot water and put a cover over your head and inhale ( Something like Vick vapour rub) Both of these things worked but I am sure there are better ways of getting your phlegm up to-day.

I can only be honest I am nr. 2years now no smoke and I am worse and more mucus I wont smoke again but I can understand why some continue the damage is done and sadly it hasn't slowed my progression I also think there are a lotmore factors to this disease than smoking x

Sometimes giving up at a later stage is more a case of damage limitation than feeling healthier. I think a lot of it is down to genetics and pure luck. I am still mild 11 years after diagnosis despite still smoking most of that time. x

Hello Shadow4me When you smoke the lungs have to work harder to supply sufficient air to your body This causes them to expand more and then because you are breathing in harder you breath more toxic pollutants into your body and then because your body has an healing intelligence it produces phlegm to help it cope with the pollutants and the nicotine and gradualy the phlegm will build up causing you problems

YES SHADOW4ME , OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS , AFTER TALKING TO MANY IN MY 31 ADMISSIONS TO HOSPITAL WITH THIS WRETCHED ILLNESS, ONLY SIX PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THEY WERE EX SMOKERS ! .....ALL THE REST " HAV'NT A CLUE WHERE IT CAME FROM " , AND I'ME TALKING ABOUT 180 PEOPLE IN ALL ! ..... UP TO NOW IT HAS BEEN " FASHIONABLE " TO SAY IT WAS CAUSED BY " SMOKING ALONE " , NOW EVEN DOCTORS ARE HAVING TO RE THINK THIS WHOLE BLOODY BUSINESS !!! .......THANKLIES FOR COMMENTS - GOOD LUCK !

Hi Vittorio I have been coughing up mucius since the 1940s so much so that I had two lobectomies in the fifties It is something you have to cope with. It is an unpleasant experience but I treat it as an indication of my lungs condition.Despite my operations my bronciecsasis came back..It has got a lot worse in the last four years.and I have only been out three times since last November and I have been hospitalised twice in the last two years. I have a spitting bowl which is use every day.I look at phlegm according to the colour which tells me if I need anti-biotics My lungs produce Phlegm all the time but I know when it is a fresh green that I am ok.Any change of colour tells me I need to take action otherwise it will get worse I have learnt how to deal with my condition because if I hadn't I would be pushing up the daisies.

Fresh green? I was told anything but clear means infection

I think the body produces about a litre of mucus everyday which helps to clear foreign substances from the lungs. It is generally continuous and exits the lungs and is swallowed without even being aware of it. Under certain conditions the lung may produce more mucus or thicker mucus which you become more aware of as it may be harder to clear.

The alveoli, the cells where CO2 and O2 are exchanged, stop multiplying and reproducing around age 21. So the damaged condition can only be halted, or slowed down, but never reversed like other organs in the body.

I find the best way for me to move mucus when I've got a lot stuck on my lungs is walking, it can be quite hard to start with especially if the mucus is hard to move but I keep going once it starts clearing it gets easier that's the best way I've found of getting rid of it x
