Hi everyone . Does anyone on here with copd know if my partner can claim PIP , my partner has been told by his nurse he mite be able to claim it . How easy or difficult is it and does one need to do a face to face to get it. Iv read on Google it's automatic in some areas. We're currently waiting for forms to arrive and fill out. Any advice gratefully received. 🤔😘
PIP : Hi everyone . Does anyone on here... - Lung Conditions C...
PIP
Apply and go from there. My dad is going for it. You can ask for home visit if your partner is unable to make it as in they need oxygen all the time.
Hello,
My OH got enhanced rate on both living and mobility as he has severe COPD. He had to have a face to face but it was not that onerous. Just remember when answering the questions both on the form and in person, that you relate them to the really bad days. I still have the notes from his application and am happy to email them to you if you PM me your address. The Citizen's Advice Bureau also have experts who can help you if you make an appointment.
Thanks Bossidan. X
Email recieved thank you so much x
Well you can claim anything you like but whether you get it is another matter. As the forms are quite complex make sure you get help filling them in from either the CAB or a local disability centre. Good luck. x
When you are filling in the forms keep a diary for a week of the daily difficulties he has to live a normal life.photocopy it and include it with the forms.Remember that you get points for each box that you tick that he cannot do a task and needs help with it. For instance, would he eat if you didn’t cook it for him. Also look around the house for every piece of equipment that he needs. Nebuliser and other medical equipment, electric bed and things like that. Also all the things that you have to do for him.Base the answers to the questions on the worst days, not the best days. Any anxiety caused by his breathlessness which he has in socialising or going out, stopping him using public transport or going to shopping centres or supermarkets is very important. Sounds crazy but I got more points for the mental health issue of anxiety than I did for my bronch.
Ask for a home visit for the face to face. When the assessor is there he should resist the temptation to try to do anything physical that the assessor might ask him to, like walking around or standing on one leg-just too exhausting!
I hope that has helped a bit
Thank you hypercat54 and missyscarlet I'm not sure he'll get it . He spends his day sitting watching the tv. No life for either of us really. I asked him to mow the lawn yesterday whilst I went to work, when I came back I saw him outside after he'd done it struggling to breath. It's only a small lawn too. He's still in denial about his condition which is difficult for me as well. Reading how it effects others makes me realise what I'm going to have to help him with in the future. Thank you all. X 🤔
I also got enhanced rate on both, so please fill in the form. Good luck please let us know how you get on. Have a wonderful day and take care of yourself 😊Bernadette xxx
I suggest you get help from Citizens Advice or a welfare benefits adviser (some local authorities have them). Having helped with many of these I would suggest you look at the points system and base the answers around those. Depending on age, some areas have staff at Age UK who can also help.
Thanks soul01 😊
Make sure you have any copies of letters from doctors and consultants available, and always give answers that represent the worst days. Don’t be brave, you need support. Good luck xx
😚
Hi it is hard to get p.i.p. they look at what your illness affects not what it is but how it affects your daily living what you can and can't do if there's a few things he can do daily he might not get it if he can walk a few feet without being breathless they will say he don't need it it's hard to get but hopefully he will get it good luck .
The forms are a minefield designed to stop you getting pip. You will need help from loval charities, cab etc. Most applications r turned down automatically so you need to persevere and DONT understate condition. If condition is terminal a ds1500 form completed by your doctor can avoid having to complete forms. Good luck
Fill in the forms and apply for it and make sure you ask for an home visit or assessment
Good luck
Google descriptors for PIP. Look at the descriptors and match them to your answers. For example eating. Do you require large handled knives, forks etc. That can give you three points. In my case I am on supplements. I. E protein drinks that is six points. On the form never give a yes or no answer. On a good day my wife can walk a good distance. On a bad day she struggles to do a few yards. The important thing to note is that it varies. Always fill out the form as if it is your worst day. They will try to get you to say how many bad days you have in a week etc. Obviously any activity you do you must be able to do safely, repetitively and without physical or mental stress. For example how far can you walk without becoming breathless or desaturating. Remember there is no such thing as too much information. You will find yourself repeating yourself again and again when answering questions as the same limitations apply to each. Keep a copy of all your answers and send copies of all doctors letters which state conditions or limitations. The answer boxes are very small do not be afraid to use further pages. In my wife's case I sent the form and a further 16 pages of information including photographs of adaptations, supplementary details to each question. The more information you give the easier it is to appeal.
Hi Yes I have COPD and have just received Pip. The money will depend on mobility and dressing washing and eating. Good luck
If in doubt apply is my motto. As said elsewhere get help with the form, often first applications are refused but try again if that happens. Because you are entitled to claim PIP even if working, good luck with your partners claim. I have COPD but my claim was granted for other health issues, so can't really advise on claiming with COPD plus mine is DLA which was before PIP and one or two rules were a little different then, but the general rules are still very similar.
You have to ring them they will ask a few questions (medical) then form in post make you put everything down medication how long it takes you to get upstairs what equipment you use ie. Wheelchair. I arranged for them to come to my house. I have anxiety attacks. Did little tests. Like getting upstairs (take your time) let them know what help is needed ie having a shower. How much oxygen you are on. Keep mentioning oxygen they forgot that part with me and I had to get them to ring the hospital to confirm. Tell all medication you are taking it all helps. My hubby does our cooking as I find the steam affects my chest image her write this down as there are things I cannot do anymore. They wl contact your doctor if they need more information. If yout wife/partner is going to claim for carers allowance think you apply through universal credit they can only say no your entitled nut I went back and tung them every week just to keep them on their toes. Nut got there. And if you have a mobility car that's if you get high rate pip your partner can drive it as long as you are in the car. Ring city council for blue badge think t was £10.0 and passport size photo. Which comes in handy for parking.good luck. If you need equipment like chair for shower ring occupational therapy at city council they will help and also cushions for your wheelchair or settees. They are very helpful
Just wanted to clarify - I am allowed to drive the motability car without my OH in it as long as I am doing something for him or that he has asked me to do!! I would be unable to visit him in hospital or the hospice otherwise!!
Yes you are x
Yes it's fine . I think it's so you don't use it for voluntary work transporting other people about . Bossidan. Don't you worry about it. X
If hes under 64 yrs old then theres no reason not to apply if he has copd or other qualifying illnesses
Yes he is soulboy118 he's 54. I don't know what else he can apply for but PIP would help considerably as he's not been working for the last 2 years. 😐
Howl long have you been waiting for your forms. . I gave a quick call to ask how long normally take. It did the trick arrived a few days later. They do come to you I had a home visit because of copd. It was about 3 weeks after then I had confirmation. Make sure you list all medication including oxygen and nebuliser. How far you can walk.
List everything you can think of to help your case.
Thanks spacecat1. I'v been waiting for a week now. I hope they arrive tomorrow, if not I'll give them a ring. 😗
