Last Man Standing (On the steps of Windsor Castle)

β€’43 Replies

First it was my Dad

He went in 1986

Followed by my Mother

Who went in 1996

My Sister was the third to go

By then it's 2010

And I'll be going shortly

I don't know precisely when

Now when it comes to age

We've all done rather well

Mother out-lived Dad by ten

I'm very pleased to tell

My sister died the youngest

She was only eighty-four

My Dad was then next in line

Who lived for one year more

So there's my Mum at 94

The one I have to beat

I need to take more exercise

And be careful what I eat.

That’s a lovely family photo . Your dad looks proud of his family and your mum and sister have lovely smiles . You look a very promising young man 😊.

Three of those people never smoked or drank alcohol. The forth eventually did both. πŸ™„

Lovely family picture Don. They may all have passed on now but I'm sure they are always in your thoughts.

β€’ in reply toPantani

They are indeed. I'm finding that the older you get the greater the flow of memories.

Wow how old was your Dad when he died just a year on to your 84 year old sister? πŸ€”πŸ€”

Sorry Don I read it wrong I thought you meant your visit to Windsor castle oops sorry

β€’ in reply toDilly2

My Dad was born 1901 and died 1986, too young to fight in WW1 and too old for WW2. But he fought fires in the Auxiliary (later to become the National) Fire Service in addition to his full-time day job.

Cracking photo Don 😎 I’ve not been to Windsor castle since the safari park was open, other than once about 8 years ago when I said to my wife, β€˜Let’s go to the safari park’ so we drove all the way there and then straight back home when we realised it had shut down years previously 🀣🀣

β€’ in reply toBrianTaylor

The photo was taken during the early 1940s but I don't remember a thing about it. It's a puzzle to me who took it. πŸ€”

As dear Carole says a lovely photo and one of your best verses yet Master Po.reckon you need to find something that rhymes with more than 100 for your own eulogy,i hope so anyway.

I don't think that will be necessary Grasshopper:

I wake up in the morning

When my head stops spinning round

It's hit and miss whether I kick start up

Or finally go to ground

It's a little dog that makes me

Get up from off my bed

She needs to pooh and breakfast

Which she can't do if I am dead. πŸ˜‰

Great photo Don. You have a way to go then. How about trying to get that telegram from the queen? xx

β€’ in reply tohypercat54

Funny init I lined the funeral route as a Sapper doing my National Service when her Dad died.

I wonder if she will line it for you if you go before her? x

β€’ in reply tohypercat54

I was once told that her father would me have lined-up if I didn’t behave myself.πŸ’‚β€β™‚οΈ

That’s great motivation Don.

Hope you are still exercising after finishing your course?

I’ve just completed my course and am doing my best though I must admit I miss the company from the class. πŸ˜‰

Perhaps we could start an online exercise class???πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

β€’ in reply toWhitechinchilla

The company makes a big difference doesn't it? I feel a bit daft doing all that on my own and the dog gives me some funny looks!

Whitechinchilla profile image
Whitechinchilla

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚maybe he would like to join in???

I agree with you though Don. I have a small one bed flat so could not contemplate any equipment, but I have started playing music on YouTube and that at least seems to make it a little more pleasant. I really want to keep it up but some days it is a huge effort and its only the thought that I might have to go back to the very beginning if I stop that motivates me.

Have to say though I do feel better in myself. You?

You keep it now as you gave a great goal to work towards πŸ˜‰

β€’ in reply toWhitechinchilla

I’ve been having a bit of trouble with some of my other conditions, but I certainly benefited from PR. πŸ‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ™‚

7 more years? Should pass by in a breeze.

Great piece by the way.

Great pic too. These pics kinda whisks me away to a different era, probably more beautiful and less complicated times. Still hear the stories from my grandad whose 101.πŸ˜„

β€’ in reply toBilabong

I think those days were much less complicated, but very much harder. Well done granddad, I’ll think myself lucky if I get through another winter, but then you never know. πŸ˜‰

Only you know the effort it takes to put forth such a wonderful uplifting verse. Be assured, it brings glad feelings to look back over the years at such a happy smiling family. Thank you for sharing this, Don. J

Oh! Don, this made me feel tingly, such a lovely photo and another great verse. I know times were hard but what a lovely time to grow up in, you must have very fond memories, thanks for brightening my day and give a Midge a big hug from me x

β€’ in reply toIzb1

Oh Irene! I thought the days when I could make a girl feel β€˜tingly’ were long since gone. 🀣 When I think back about the changes that have taken place since that photo was taken, I can hardy believe I’m still on the same planet. But some of the people are still the same. There’s a much wider range of different types now, at one time we were all pretty much of a sameness going about our daily lives. But now and then I meet someone who might still be quite young, but reminds me of someone I knew over 70 years ago. That then makes me β€˜tingly’. πŸ˜‰

Long time since anybody thought of me as a girl Don ha! Maybe its the same characteristics that you see in that person that reminds you of them, no matter the age x

Maybe I just ramble on too much! πŸ™„x
