Hi Rileyocool I was the same and found out after a second bout of pneumonia. It took about 9 months to start feeling better but I still cough as that is the nature of the disease. I don’t cough so much as I have done over the past 6 years. You need to cough the mucus up otherwise it festers in your lung and causes infection. Everyone is different and getting over pneumonia can take time and of course depends on whether you are still struggling to go to work and carrying on doing everything or not working and taking things slowly. Xxx😊

Thanks for the response .. so your cough lingered for months after the infection was gone ??

Yes it never goes completely with bronchiectasis but I would go back to your GP just in case the pneumonia hasn’t completely cleared. When I first got it I was on a cruise ship on a 12 day cruise, when I got back my chest was still very wheezy and cough still bad he said it hadn’t completely cleared even though on oral and IV antibiotics on the cruise so had another week of antibiotics and was a lot better. It’s always safer to get it checked which will ease your mind also. Xx

I had cough, shortness of breath and fatigue for quite a while after pneumonia. It’s good you are being monitored. You seem to have gone through the mill with this so it will take time to get over it. It is worrying when you get breathless taking a shower and getting dressed and can’t do anything but your body has to repair itself and rest is the only thing that helps. I have had pneumonia twice the first time I was working and struggled to carry on which took me longer to get over. The second I was retired by then and just rested as much as I could until it passed. Don’t worry it will pass and there are many on this site that have the same problems and who have had pneumonia as well. Xxxx 😊

Yes it’s just i am such an active person & this diliberates my general activities everyday n given the fact it’s been 3 months to no avail it had me wondering xxxx

An xray will not diagnose bronchiectasis. It needs a ct scan to do that and a bronchiectasis specialist to interpret it. Find the name of a bronch specialist in your area, usually at large teaching hospitals and take it to your GP. Insist on a referral then you can get a proper diagnosis. Do Not Take No for an answer. If you do have bronch it needs more specialised treatment and management than you are getting at present. If you do not have bronch the specialist can also treat whatever your ongoing problem turns out to be.

You cannot let things go on as they are.

Littlepom you are right it took two ct scans to diagnose bronchiectasis for me, the first ct scan didn’t show it but the second ct scan was a thorax which showed it clearly.

I hope that you are getting the right treatment now

Sorry to bother you again but did you have an idea how often you would cough & for exactly how long I e months , weeks etc & what it felt like before you coughed ??

I think the two coupled together causes coughing anyway. I was quite ill the year I had pneumonia and I had colonisation of pseudomonas about 5 months later but once they gave me the correct antibiotic I have been better. I think the length of coughing varies some days I could cough all day and night other times just in the day. Perhaps you are hoping for a quicker recovery? I’m sure your consultant will help this week maybe give you some answers. Let us know how you get on xx

Yes .Thankuou little Pom , I am actually due back to see the specialist this week , with my c T scan , I intend on giving him a full list of mysypmtoms , and discussing his thinking of the mild bronc” ... he also will have some blood test result for me aswell hopefully he will be able to shred some light on and begin a course of action or treatment for the ongoing issue xxx

Good luck. Do let us knowhowyou go on. Don’t forget that self management is as important as all of the drugs and there are plenty of us on here who have been doing that for a long time.

Hi, just a little query, I have bronchiecstasis and had a cough for on and off for years had so many x-rays but diagnosis was only made after a CT scan, and i was told it was the only way to get a firm diagnosis, it may be wort asking for a scan.
