Hi I’m 49 and recently diagnosed. I work full time in a school, I’m busy I’ve taken up running (since my diagnosis). I’ve been doing yoga for 4 years , recently gave up teaching swimming as I was coughing too much, , I cough a lot, but never feel out of breath. I nebulise twice a day and have medication to loosen the mucus , and anti inflammatory pills at night. I’m always coughing sometimes bringing mucus up sometimes not. I have just finished ac2 week course of antibiotics, still coughing. I’m going to take a sample to my drs and am waiting for a call from Papworth hospital about my cough. Is there anything else I can do??? Should I cough so much ?? I have coughed for about a year, should the cough go when I’m well???

Thanks so much, I’ve only just found this it’s fabulous. G

Welcome to this brilliant forum. You say you have a diagnosis but you do not say what that is. Could you tell us a little more?

Sorry Bronchiectasis.

There are several members here with bronchiectasis. And they are very expert. They will respond soon. I think the advice you will get is to do various exercises to clear the mucus in your lungs. Also you should have a consultant with special expertise in bronchiectasis.

Tell us how things go.

Hi Gamum , this is only my 2nd winter with COPD but I cough all the time and it seems to be part of the illness for so many of us. I cough even when I don’t have an infection. The main thing that helps me with the cough and the phlegm is 2 supplements... NAC and Serrapeptase which thin and reduce the mucus. When it’s really bad, I have an infection or I can’t get the phlegm up, I also use a salt pipe.

Ps. it’s good that you’re getting a sample checked!

Hi Gamum sorry to hear that you are unwell. Are you diagnosed with COPD? This site covers many lung diseases so in order for others to give advice it depends what you have. Xxx😊

Yes it can be part of your illness. It is very common to cough with broniextacics. But the dr may be able to help its just a case of waiting to see what they come up with. I had to give up swimming because i coughed so much i think its the clorien in the air

There r breathing techniques which are vital to cough up the mucus you should see a respiratory physio asap for advice on how to do it well, and there are devices that can called an acapella. Meantime go on you tube an search for active cycle of breathing, so you can make a start.

Hi and welcome. You will have your cough much more under control once you have seen your consultant and been referred to a respirtory physiotherapist, who will teach you lung clearance techniques and show you gadgets to see what suits you best.

Take a look at this link meantime

europeanlunginfo.org/bronch...

I had the good fortune to be involved as part of the patient advisory group, so I’m not biased at al!!!!

As Katinka says make sure you find a respiratory consultant who has a special interest in cf/non cf bronchiectasis -believe me it makes a difference.

Please let us know how you get on.

Many thanks , I am under the lung Defence team at Papworth hospital (luckily for me they are 20 mins away) I have seen a physio who has shown me the clearing techniques and I have a (pep) tube I use normally on the way to work in the car , I get some weird looks but it fits it into my day 😄

Good news you are under the care of a good team. My only concern would be the efficacy of the pep you are using if you are complaining of constant cough. Maybe I cough more than I realise even with twice daily nebulising and physio, as I have had it so many years now I just don’t notice. Probably do actually as my sis says she knows exactly where I am in a shop because of my particular type of wet cough!

Hi what is a pep tube?

I think that’s what it’s called it’s a thick tube with a valve at the end. I have to blow through it it restricts the blow out which opens up the small tubes in the lungs helping to free the mucus xx

Welcome Gamum.

I don’t have your specific condition, but just to say do keep posting here, you will learn more here than from any other source. Plus the support and encouragement is very empowering. Good wishes for your answers.
