Disabled Parking Permit

Has anyone here with Emphysema managed to obtain a disabled parking permit, I have difficulty walking any great distance in cold, windy, or uphill conditions, without stopping to catch my breath? Any advice prior to completing the application would be greatly appreciated. Also I should add I am not in receipt of any benefits. Thanks in advance.

Have you not considered applying for PIP, blue badge is automatic.

Going down the assessed route may require a face to face assessment, although this can be avoided with sufficient evidence.

I have copd & arthritis inboth knees got my badge 3 yrs ago easily but i have never tried to claim pip or any other benifit cos i wasnt sure if i would get it altho it would be a big help my wifes copd is worse than mine we are both 71 & 70 respectively.

I have a blue badge, I have COPD , I just put that on the form and told them it was difficult for me walking anywhere. Hope this helps, let's us know how you get on.😊 Bernadette xx

Like for PIP allowance if you struggle to walk for 20 metres or less you should get it but you might need a doctors letter. Further advice from the BLF helpdesk

You can get the form from your local authority. Fill it in with details of your worst days, not the regular ones. If they ask to see you, remember that they often look out over the car park so don't let it show if you're having a sprightly day I was going to leave my medication until after I'd been interviewed if they asked to see me so I would be extra breathless but I never needed to!

I dont know anything about the PIP application but good luck with the blue badge.

I have copd & i got mine 3 yrs back quite easily but i also have arthritis in my knees but only in one knee back then but i had no problem getting it its now in both knees but i reknewed it at xmas again easily

Hi jockenglish.

My wife has emphysema & she has a blue badge ( I also ) . We applied online,although you should be able to apply at your council offices as well I would have thought. Also we registered our registration with our health authority which gives a flat tarrif on parking charges. Very handy.

I applied to my health trust online or alternatively I could have applied at the security office at my hospital. Guide lines were set last year for all nhs trusts to discount parking charges for registered blue badge holders.Not all are following these guide lines obviously.

You should not have any problem at all in getting a blue badge and as stone-UK has said you should also be entitled to claim PIP particularly if you cannot walk further than 20m without stopping for a break so give it a go.

I'll be really interested in the replies . I am a prisoner indoors in winter. The cold causes problems for my asthma and bronchiectasis. I just get ill. Don't think i'd qualify for anything cos I don't really get out of breathe unless hoovering!

I would have thought you have nothing to lose applying for pip and a badge. Good luck.

I got one I have copd apply to local council are you on benefits think that would help but give it a go they will advise you. If you have oxygen that may help but give it a go they will help. And apply for the warmth scheme with your electric company.its a short form on line I got £144a year towards our heating cost

I had a Blue Badge before I was any benefits. But they did change their way of granting them and used PIP Mobility as the benchmark. However if you can show that you cannot walk more than 20 metres without severe discomfort then they should grant you one. On my council's web site I could attach documents from my hospitals etc. I also added one from Pulmonary Rehab that states I cannot do the course as I am exercise intolerant.

Hi, I got a blue badge from my local county council (East Sussex) but had to have a walk test to prove how little distance I could cover. It took about 6 weeks to get thro'.

I think my GP provided a letter for the council to help matters thro', other than that I cannot remember any more ,sorry.

I'm not in receipt of any benefits as I've never worked and paid taxes in the UK. I have COPD and bronchiectasis, I applied to Leicestershire County Council online answered the questions asked and received my disabled parking a couple of weeks later.

WOW I wish I got it that quickly, I have been refused, I to suffer from COPD and have severe asthma and still being refused. Lucky you. I guess the council's are all different with their decision here they are not easy to hand them out.

Hi, I'm now receiving pip but I have had my Blue Badge for many years, I had to go and do a walk assessment and it came through, photo copy your forms so you know what you put on them for the next time. 😘

This is an interesting tropic. I have applied last year for a blue badge and have been refused.

I also have applied for PIP last year, because my job work coach told me that I should apply for PIP, because I don't get any benefit only my NHS stamp. And I have heard that you get the blue badge too if you get PIP, but I also have been refused..... I am quite a bit shocked, that I have been refused on both accounts. I have attached a letter in both application, I got this one from my doctor last year, that I can apply for a blue badge. He wrote in the letter that I have very severe asthma with a lung capacity just over 20% sitting 28%. But I still have been refused...I don't understand. I guess you have to be crawling on all for to get a blue badge and close to death, sorry I am very angry about it, because i really have a problem with walking long distance, get very quickly out of breath. I don't go shopping anymore because I can't carry heavy shopping bags and walk back to my car, my partner has to do all that. Without my car I would be completely isolated and I still have problems when I have appointments at hospital or at my GP because I can't use the disabled car bay....my partner drop me of as close as possible, or I have to take a taxi to my GP, special when the weather is cold, because I can't use my car and use the disabled parking. I don't find it fair....you are not alone.

Have applied for mine but don't hold out much hope, 68 years old, not on or eligible for any benefits, living on the west coast of Scotland which is cold and windy except for a couple of months, if we are lucky, in the summer. I do struggle to walk far without stopping to catch my breath, but it seems you have to be nearly deceased here to get a badge, by which time it is unlikely to be of much use to you anyway.

However, I will report the response from the council and take it from there.
