Yes any and all exercise is good for people with copd. Just pace yourself and build up the amount steadaly. And stairs are a realy good work out for your leg mucles witch will help keep you mobile alouing you to do more for longer

Yes very much so, "Steps" were part of my PR which I trashed totally, because I live up 3 flights of 14 steps and if I need the bathroom on getting home I have yet another set inside our maisonette to go up. The simple task of taking down the rubbish to the wheelie bin used to be an ordeal, now I treat it as exercise. I ended my PR by doing 200 steps in one session. I have severe, almost very severe COPD. Go for it. Just simple walking is good exercise too, as long as you get moderately breathless doing it. For all round exercise, upper and lower body exercise I use a rowing machine, the piston resistance type are quite cheap.

As long as everyone understands what is ment all is good. Keep asking the questions you need answers to between us all im sure we will work it out.

Hi Duff you should always ask your doctor first but as a former physical educator the rule is do the most you can without injuring yourself. If you get winded just stop and wait til it passes. Although I don’t know if you have any muscle/skeletal issues going on. You don’t want to fall on stairs you’ll bruise your knees & shins it might not be pretty but if you can handle it without severe injury DO IT, I believe with ALL MY HEART the good will outweigh any bad in the long run. Good luck keep up the good work I congratulate you for pushing through👍 tho do check with doc bcuz I’m not one of those

There is a great amount of evidence that exercise is good for you. For your safety I would first ask my doctor for a check over to ensure that your blood pressure and pulse etc are ok. Build up the amount of steps slowly. I first started by standing at the bottom of the stairs and just using one step. It is much safer. If you have a problem then you are only one step from a flat surface rather than having a problem halfway up a set of stairs. I found chair lifts good for building up leg strength. Basically you sit on a chair fold your arms across your chest and stand. Again it is always best to build up slowly.

Hi, I think any exercise is good, the rehab team tend to say that 1/2No stairs is good for home exercise, so I would say that you should keep it up & stay fit.

As you all know, I exercise almost everyday and go to The Gym, always on Oxygen.... When I could no longer Climb my Stairs in my Previous House I applied for a Bungalow.... The Point I'm making is everyone is Different, Different Levels of Lung Disease. My Oxygen in my Blood couldn't get me up those Stairs, even though I could do 200 Steps at Rehab. The Nurses told me that I had put far to much Pressure on my Other Organs Trying to Climb those Stairs. So, before you Climb Stairs unnecessarily, check with Blood gases, Oxygen saturates, and your PR Nurse who knows your Limitations. As I Said NOT everyone is the same. Good Luck Hun. xxx

Well said !! Although it can be good to promote exercise it must be done safely and with caution.Everyone has different tolerances and their lung diseases are different. So pleased you have drawn attention to this.I pushed myself harder and harder believing that this was the thing to do after reading many posts on here saying that all exercise was good.I got into bad habits with my breathing and tolerated very low levels of oxygen which did me no good at all. xx

Hope your ok now Hun. we must exercise, but Knowing your own limitations is vitally important. Rehab is Brilliant as it is controlled by Respiratory Nurses. Best Wishes. xxxx

Hi Duff, I started exercise with the stairs and built up gradually, now I go out for a daily walk of up to 3 miles, I also do Tai Chi exercises daily which is a good gentle workout and also helps with breathing.
