I had mine on Saturday and had an aching injection site for a couple of days. I was also offered the pneumonia jab, and that arm is still a bit achy, but only if I rub it. My husband didn’t have any soreness at all. Neither of us feels any generalised unwellness.

So I suspect there are varying reactions according to the individual.

But I’d rather this than ever have to go through flu again!

I had mine yesterday vittorio also the pneumonia injection at the same time! My arm was aching quite badly last night and I couldn’t lie on it but the nurse did tell me that. I feel as if I have flu woke at 2.30 shivering and feeling awful no sleep since I’ll have to have a nap as I won’t be able to function. I do believe when they give this jab it is the flu virus and it helps the body to fight Flu as our body attack’s the virus and now it has the capability to fight flu if you get it. I maybe a little off the mark but that’s the best how I can explain it. We should be better in a day or so last year I never suffered any side affects but it maybe my copd and I had pneumonia too. The nurse said it was ok to have the 2 together and she knew of my medical history. Do hope this helps sorry it’s so long!!! 😊😊

The flu vaccines for adults are not live so cannot give you flu. There should not be side effects just a sore arm muscle for 3-4 days.

You may have been incubating a virus or bacteria before the jab.

in reply toGoldie09

Exactly right! The immune system starts attacking this foreign substance and builds up antibodies so one can’t get that strain. My mother in law 81, and myself 57 never have any side effects. However my wife gets the shakes, fever, bone knocking sickness for a couple days. It’s just how her immune system reacts. She just had her tetanus booster and same thing. I and the MIL were fine.

No problems at all

What makes some people feel awful is their own antibodies fighting the vaccine. We're all different.

If you're under 65 you got the four strain jab. Over 65 are getting the 3 strains of vaccine (I think that's the right way round).

Don't forget to continue to take precautions for the next couple of weeks, that's how long it will be before your body has done its work and your immunity has built up vittorio.

Yes that’s the right way round hun. The over 65 vac doesn’t have the Japanese flu strain but it does have an adjuvent which is supposed to boost the immune systems reaction. I’ve had the trivalent with the adjuvent but I didn’t want to have the adjuvent and so asked if I could have the 4 strain. The nurse said they had to give ‘as they were told’. So it’s a take it or leave it!

I only had a sore arm and maybe vittorio that the excessive reaction you had might be a good thing in the long run, as it might mean your immune system is pretty keen.

Hello lovely Cof, how lovely to 'see' you. Well at least you tried. I'm thinking this years idea is an experiment. I thought I might get the 4 strain jab at a pharmacy by lying about my age! I don't see why we should be deprived of the 4th protection. Do they think we all live alone with no contact with the outside world -ever! Grrr anyway, I'm glad you didn't suffer too much with yours dear lady. I'm due to have mine in 7 days, they ran out for my previous appointment a month ago 😁

How are you feeling now, any better? 😘

Hi Sweetheart

As I understand it the Japanese flu is less severe than the other three and last year the effectiveness of the flu jab in the over 65s was poor, so this is why they decided to put in an adjuvent to boost the immune system. An answer I can’t get from anywhere (not for the want of trying) is if the boost to the immune system is selective to the flu jab.

Still struggling hun with the GIs and stuff. Today started with a lung infection, high temp, filthy gunk and that horrid taste. Bit concerned as I have had to start abs and I am supposed to be going for a nasal tube put through the nose and keep it, I think overnight on the 13th. It’s to check if there is actual evidence I need to be on the PPIs. So I have to come off them 7 days before the test. AAAArrrrrrrgh!

Hope you are well as can be lovely.

Mine was fine no sore arm and no feeling awfull best one yet 😊

in reply tocorriena

I think it depends who’s giving the shot. Sometimes my arm aches and sometimes nothing.

I’ve got mine coming up next week

I’ve had times where it’s completely done me bad lol and then times where my arm was a bit sore and that’s it . Let’s see what happens ! 🤞🏽

The under 65's have the 4 strain vaccine, the over 65's (75 in Scotland) have the Fluad vaccine, 3 strain plus an adjuvant added. The latter seems to be a problem, especially with anyone who is immune suppressant. Neither is a live vaccine. The nasal spray given to children is. Hope this helps. X

Not sure but mine always makes my arm hurt and I get a nice red bump. My mum reckons I’m lying because she’s always fine afterwards. It affects everyone differently. Sorry you felt so awful afterwards!

No after effects at all in our case, we had the over 65 one

No after effects from the jab. I took the precaution of cleaning my upper arm with surgical spirits before I went as they don't clean the skin beforehand these days, and could jab some of the surface bacteria into the blood stream with the vaccine.

HungryHufflepuff profile image
HungryHufflepuff in reply toErgendl

Why don’t they clean the skin anymore?? In these days of over the top health and safety regulations I would have thought that’s a surprising thing to stop doing.

Ergendl profile image
Ergendl in reply toHungryHufflepuff

I'm not sure - possibly cost cutting or time saving? I just know that when they first gave me a jab without cleaning the injection site, I got a hard sore lump under the skin afterwards. But I've had no problems since, possibly because I always clean the skin with surgical spirits now immediately before I go.

in reply toErgendl

Yikes, there is no excuse for not cleaning the skin before an injection, shoddy practise as it doesn't cost much for a bacterial wipe. Definitely still do it over here.

I had mine two weeks ago followed by (three days later) the first of two injection against pneumonia, no reactions whatsoever, is my vaccine (French) different, don't know but have never had a reaction.

Hello , I had some different reactions this time, but put it down to being under par due to recovering from a broken shoulder. Never normally have any reactions only once in twenty odd years.

Thought my pneumonia jab was a doddle, but it did really ache later in the day. My first ever Flu jab this year, so was not sure what to expect, but had no major significant side effects that I remembered, might have been a bit warm and snuffly for a day, but cannot say it was the jabs fault.

undine profile image

I have had the jabs every year for the past 5 years with no problems at all and this year had the mega jab again with no problems guess you and friend were just unlucky x

frazwag profile image

i had the flu jab 3 years running and 3 year i was badly with what i call dry flu, which just seems to wipe me out no other symptoms, no cold, running nose or chest, one year it literally put me in bed for for a whole weeks total fatigue sleeping for the best part of every day. After talking with my immunology consultant because i have become intolerant to eggs with my COPD, it affects my breathing and i thought it may have been the egg in the vaccine . but he said it does affect people in different ways and the best way to try and avoid any side effects was to have it on a Friday and take it easy for a couple of days over the weekend. it will attack anybody that has a low immune system or run down due to illness so no strenuous exercise. the 4th year i took is very easy and was fine.

Thanks for that good advice.

No side effects apart from slightly sore injection site for a day.
