Two colds recently, no chest infections

Everyone in my office has had the cold, it went round like wildfire and, despite a ton of hand gel and packet upon packet of wipes, I Succumbed.I am normally very ill with a cold. Like most of us I get a chest infection, a horrible cough and I struggle to breathe. This time, five days since I started sneezing, I'm well on the way to recovery. No chest infection, no cough, no problems breathing. I've actually recovered faster than everyone else at work.

This is the second cold I've had this year. The other one was the same, just a simple cold that I got over without being dreadfully ill.

Don't get me wrong, I'm immensely grateful, I could weep with relief. But surely this isn't normal?

I take various supplements but they can't possibly be this effective. Anyone any ideas why suddenly I seem to be able to catch cold and not even get a cough never mind a chest infection?

Hi Wageslave .

Glad to hear you are getting better. It could be you have a good, strong immune system. I think we can catch colds that don't always progress on to being serious infections. I have a cold now, but am not coughing. Thank our lucky stars maybe?

I take various supplements but, to be honest, I never expected them to make a blind bit of difference.

I am delighted to find that not every cold leads to not being able to walk the length of a room for weeks.

I don't take any supplements, but I eat healthy and exercise. I think that helps alot. And no, not every snivel leads to doom. 😀

For the first time since my diagnosis, I'm beginning to believe that you can live a long, relatively healthy life with COPD. I might not be running any marathons when I'm seventy but there's a decent chance I won't continually be gasping for breath either.Stopping smoking is the real key though. That's what buys you time and quality of life. Everything else is just fiddling round the edges

Well done for giving up the fags-you will start to notice the difference and be glad you did.

I just came back from Crete, Greece and I have mod COPD but i managed to climb rocks and hills and swam daily and walked for miles!! I just had to push through the being breathless and take my time initially but after ten days i felt brilliant!

I am convinced the swimming and walking helped so much-having stronger leg muscles really helps to power my body through tasks, even when breathless i recovered quickly.

I just have to keep it up now im home which is less motivating as the scenery not as spectacular but pretty enough with the changing autumn leaves.

Glad you are feeling positive-COPD is a horrid disease but we can do so much more than we think we can if we look after ourselves!

That's absolutely inspiring Janzo! Sometimes I think we limit ourselves just by believing we can't.

It changes everything. It just doesn't change then that month, it changes things for years. I have copd, that won't change but stopping smoking stopped my copd. It took me years to appreciate that.

I won't get well but I've stopped getting worse and no, it isn't down to the supplements. It's because I don't smoke anymore

Totally agree with you. Since I stopped smoking my copdvseems to have slowed down. Afraid did have a blip last year and ended up in hospital I succumbed to a few fags which gavevmeva lot of problems. But back on track no colds and no fags.

That's interesting. Despite being mild when I was smoking 90% of colds ended with a chest infection. Now I have stopped smoking both the 2 colds I have had haven't! Ok the 2nd one I coughed for England and it lasted a good 2 weeks but it didn't go on my chest. One very good reason to stop smoking.

I've realised, I haven't caught a cold, (Touch wood.)since I've been taking Vitimin D, prescribed for Osteoporosis. xx

Keep on taking those supplements they seem to be doing the trick!

Great news to hear that you have been able to have a cold that has not turned into a chest infection. Wonderful! Am so pleased for you.

I have not had a cold since being diagnosed a year ago with mild copd. I can hardly believe it. All my adult life I have had colds turning into throat and chest infections that have lasted for ages and have made me feel rotten and often had to be treated with antibiotics in the end. At least two bad infections a year. Also often spend time with grandchildren and others who sometimes have colds. I am absolutely convinced that my lack of a cold/bad throat/bad chest is due to me taking vitamin d3 for the whole of last winter up to end of May and have just started taking them again. My husband and my sister have also taken it for the same period and stayed free of colds and chest infections too. Like a miracle for my sister who has always succumbed to really bad chest infections. We bought the good quality ones from Boots pharmacy dept at £10.99 for 90 tablets which is around three months supply. Also use ‘First Defence’ nasal spray if I knowingly go anywhere near someone with a cold.

Incidentally I was a former 20 a day smoker but have not had one, or any type of substitute, for 30 years. Would love to know if anyone else out there is impressed with regular use of Vitamin d3 as a means of preventing colds/chest infections. Wishing you all a winter without too many health problems.

That is great Wageslave re your positive reaction to bad colds and I agree with you Anneh3 as since I started taking supplements (and no prescribed drugs) have felt the best in years. I also take vitamin D3 drops every day along with supplements and noticed the biggest change after taking a probiotic called Immunity from Optibac. When I travel on public transport, in fact anywhere with lots of people I also use First Defence. These appears to work for me so hope it continues and good to know if works for others too.

Strange....ive had the same experience and have been much better since starting supplements. Onwards and upwards!

I take vitamin D3, NAC and Cordyceps. I use First Defence when I'm around crowds too. When I think I'm coming down wth a cold I suck 1000mg Vitamin C as if they were sweeties. Vit C really seems to stop the cold getting any worse and is clinically proven to shorten the length you are sick. Less time for it to go into your chest :)
