Avoiding bad colds and chest infections

Hi all, I'm pretty new to this site. Just wondering if anyone has any good suggestions/tips about preventing these dreaded colds that turn into chest infections. Just got over 3rd cold and 2 serious chest infections and feel like I need to hide myself away from everyone including my beautiful grandchildren (who all keep getting colds. I'm aware of all the normal stuff like hand washing etc but wondered if any of you have found anything that really helps?

Thanking you in advance

Debbie

Hello, I use First defence by Vicks. I also encourage Pete to loosely drape a scarf across his mouth and nose when out.

You could invest in a catalytic lamp which burns oils that remove bad things from the air. Take care to keep away from children and be careful with the oil as it can damage work surfaces. Also use the neutral oil if perfumes affect you. Hope that helps a little. Xxxxx

Which lamp do you use sassy? I think that is a very good idea.

Hi littlepom I have one by Ashleigh&Burwood and use their oils too. You can buy them in large stores and garden centres. Xxxxxx

in reply tosassy59

Thank you I will look for one. Do you use any particular oil to kill nasties?

They all work well but Pete only tolerated the neutral oil. You can also buy a cold and flu oil and lots of nice smelling ones.

Check on amazon perhaps as prices may be better and they sell oil and the lamp. Xxxx

Just gone mad and bought two electronic diffusers and several oils from the site.

Well done. Hope you like them. Xxxx

As sassy said, First Defense is very good. I found that it was making my nose sore so use Nasal Guard Cold and Flu Blocker. At the first sign, Coldzyme which you spray in your mouth and throat. Also I suggest getting your doc to check your vitamin D levels. Many of us with lung problems cannot store vit D. GPs are reluctant because there has been hardly any research on this, but when I finally got mine tested I was very low. I had 5 weeks high dose treatment and am now on a permanent maintenance dose of 1600 iu vit D3 every day from the GP. I don’t know whether this is coincidence but have had only two colds/viruses in the three years since I started. I have probably jinxed it saying that!

I take about the same amount littlepom along with vitamin K2 so the benefits to bone density are tip top. Vitamin d3 is a wonder, so cheap & so beneficial to our immune systems too.

Cuorosedeb, take everything you can think of to keep your immune system in fighting firm.

Flu & pneumonia vaccinations

Buy an original Buff (Amazon) I wear a child size so it doesn't fall down, not only does it give you a bit of protection from the bugs it keeps the freezing air out of your airways.

As the others say, Vicks 1st a Defence.

Also in my tool kit are effervesant Vitamin C for immunity boost and

Corvonia Throat Spray, an antiseptic to murder throat bugs before they can travel down the airways - works fantastically for me. Good luck. P

Thanks for that all that info

I did not know that repsiratory problems could mean that vit D might not be stored.

Something to google to while away the hours!

Along with how to correct typos!!

in reply toWhitechinchilla

It’s not been researched but there are many people who have lung conditions who definitely know that they benefit from it. As vit D3 costs pennies when compared to antibiotics it would be worth any good GP giving it to their chest patients if it can boost against viruses and other infections.

Good advice that. Prevention better than cure!

Welcome courosedeb

As sassy and littlepom mentions, also you find this post helpful

Also risking putting the ju-ju on it, Since taking 4,000 IU of vit D3 with 150ug of vit K2 daily, just over a year ago, I have not even had a full cold, let alone flu or chest infection, but then I hardly get any sun exposure even in the summer, being inside my workshop every day.

Hello courosedeb . 👋

Everyone has offered really great suggestions. 😊👍 Generally, I stay away from crowds, wear a mask on public transport and carry hand gel. I know it's strange to wear a mask elsewhere, but in Japan it's pretty normal to lessen the risk of catching anything, even for healthy people (common in winter). We also gargle ALOT, especially after being outside. Oh and never share your hand towels and I always bleach my table tops. Slightly over the top maybe.

Take good care.

Very good advice Cas. We have a lot of Japanese tourists in Stratford and they have made it ok to wear a mask in public. My daughter wore one all through her chemo for breast cancer and never caught anything.

Oh my Verity. I didn't know your daughter had cancer? Or maybe I forgot. My brain fog can be quite bad sonetimes. I hope she's doing fine now. xx 🙋🐕💕

in reply toCaspiana

Yes thankyou Cas. She had her treatment early in 2017. Lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy which she sailed through. As far as we know she is ok now. Being her Mum I always have that fear that it may be lurking somewhere.

So understandable. I would be very concerned also. However, happy she is doing well. *HUG* to you and dear Twinkle. 🌟🌟xx

I use vicks first defence spray , nasal guard cold and flu blocker.coldzyme if I feel my throat is vulnerable. So far no colds this winter ( up to yet!) I also have been taking vit D3 and vit C + probiotics over the past 6+ months.

Not go to a walk-in clinic. Went to one yesterday where there was a predicted 2 hour wait and you were not allowed to go away and come back, or even stand outside the door as you wouldn't be able to read the screen. I think I was the only person there that did not have an infectious cold and cough and I really hope I don't get one.
