Hello - for well over a year my eldest (mild asthma) has had this thing where he is constantly trying to clear his throat. Sometimes bringing up phlegm, sometimes unable to clear. It's getting to the stage where he's embarrassed at school that he has to keep making this (admittedly horrible) sound to try and clear whatever is on his chest. Doctor prescribed brown inhaler - we did a long course - no difference whatsoever. Asthma nurse dismissed it as 'drip back' and suggested raising bed head - no difference. Room is dust free, no carpets, allergy bedding....we're trying our best to cover all bases. It is morning, noon and night. Doctors seem to dismiss it as part of asthma. Anyone any similar experiences and what else can we try??? Thanks!

I suggest that you insist on a referral to a paediatric respiratory consultant. As an asthma patient he should be under the care of a specialist anyway. Only they can do the correct tests to find out why your child is experiencing this. There are other conditions which produce what you describe as mucus on the chest which are often misdiagnosed as asthma. They are perfectly manageable with the correct treatment but it is very important that he has the correct diagnosis and treatment at this stage, for his future physical health and his self esteem. Don’t be put off by lazy professionals trying to brush your concerns aside. You know him best. Good luck.
Thank you very much. I'll perhaps ask to see a different GP and demand a referral.
I agree with littlepom. I had asthma as a child, as did my elder daughter, and neither of us had the problem your son is having. I know we all experience our conditions differently, but it does seem to me your son's problem is not being taken seriously.
Health Unlocked also have an asthma support group - Asthma Uk healthunlocked.com/asthmauk and you may find that if you ask your question on that forum, someone who has had the same symptom may have answers for you.
You could also try ringing the BLF Helpline (03000 030 555) or the Asthma UK Helpline (0300 222 5800) for advice.
Good luck. I hope you find some answers for your son soon.
Hi, I totally understand how worried you must be and totally agree with littlepom. There are other lung complaints which are misdiagnosed as asthma. Some of us have asthma plus another lung condition. Another term for that 'back drip' is post nasal drip. Some have an excess of mucus dripping down from the nasal passages if they have sinus issues, can make us cough, particularly at night.your poor child putting up with this. I hope you'll do as littlepom suggests and request a specialist. If you can afford it get a private consultation with CT scan.

I suffered the very same issues. I’m a Grandmother! 😳
I was prescribed different meds by my MD but that only masked the problem.
A holistic doctor suggested I avoid dairy, easy carbs and soy products. I’m much better now but since I cheat once in awhile the symptoms return. To my reasoning, the recurring phlegm proves the holistic approach was correct. 😉
My son had asthma very badly every winter from age 3. If only I knew then what I know now. I've learnt to be proactive & try to show my kids how they can help their little ones. Sad thing is, GPs know a little about many things (not all ailments at all) some are useless and some are amazing. Good luck with your son, thinking of you. P
