Wherever did they go?

When I were nowt but a lad

I used to get chilblains real bad.

Toasting my tootsies by the fire,

Brought them on and they were dire.

They'd itch like mad and when in bed,

You could see them glowing there, bright red.

Now I don't get them anymore.

No cold lino on the floor.

No open fire to toast the toes.

Where did they go to, no one knows.

Ouch Don, I used to get chilblains too and certainly don’t miss them one bit.

Hope you are doing well. Xxxxx

I don’t know what suddenly made me think of chilblains. I suppose I was comparing problems I had then with the ones I have now. I’m doing ok thanks as I hope you and Pete are. 😘

That brings back long lost memory's Don ....I can hear my mam warning me I'd get chilblains if I did get my feet from in front of the the fire 😂 Wonder if today's generation have even heard of them, must ask my grandchildren, bet they look at me as if I've lost the plot ha ha. Xxx

in reply topegbl

Doubt whether many here have heard of chilblains. My rhymes are becoming more and more inappropriate for this forum. ☹️

I agree with joyce74 We love your ryhmes whatever their topic. I was about to say nothing is inappropriate for this forum but I was thinking more along the lines of chillblanes on a lung forum, I'm sure there are inappropriate things! 😄 So yes, please keep the ryhmes coming.

How did you get that picture of my toes Don ? 😉👣

I remember them Don. Was it Snowfire ointment we used to put on them ? Sheila xx

Snowfire was for chapped hands, or knees when I wore short pants. I vaguely remember spit being the only thing to relieve the itch. Rubbed on with your finger unless your aim was good. ;-)

I remember the pain of chapped legs and chilblains....and red mottled legs from having to sit too close to the fire, while your back was freezing cold.

And dire warnings that you would melt the fat round your kidneys if you did turn your back on the fire.

good old days!

Never had them, they can stay away.... I had enough Eczema to keep me itchy and hot thanks as a child. They look 'orrible. I still have some snow fire ointment which I put on my cracked finger ends, and you can still buy it. You have just reminded me of my Dad spitting on my itches and rubbing them. Reckon that is how I got the cold sore virus - absolutely revolting thought, but he meant well.

in reply toWheezyAnne

Spit was used for a number of medicinal purposes in the ‘old days’ disgusting though it may sound today.😉

My gran's house had jack frost on the inside of the bedroom windows!!! no central heating then, chilblains normal, was always told it was my fault for warming up my fingers and toes too quickly!! at the end of a bad winter could have cracked and bleeding finger ends, wearing gloves indoors helped, nothing else seemed to.

Such bliss to get central heating and an electric blanket. Those put paid to my chilblains, and the frost on the inside of the windows.

I know exactly how it felt as a child with chilblains and am glad you no longer get them..........but unfortunately when you have Raynauds you have chilblains most of the year though they are worse in the winter, they did not know about this when I was young they were just chilblains!!

Your own urine was the most effective remedy.

No need to ask how that was discovered. ;-)

Yes I remember chilblains, hobbling to school, toes inside my boots bandaged up with strips of old sheets. I really suffered as I often had chilblains on my ears and thighs too. One year a teacher told our class to run, I just couldn't. Normally she was very strict, however, when I told her about my broken chilblains and she saw the mucky bandages, full of the goo that leaked from them, she carried me into school, I was excused p.e, and outdoor playtime until my feet healed. I still get chilblains because of Raynauds but nowhere near as badly.

in reply towheezyof

Poor you! I never got them anywhere near that bad. :-(
