Hello and welcome to the spuedo club for Alan. There are quite a few of us on here who are colonised with it. It lives in the atmosphere and being very opportunistic takes advantage of damaged lungs to make its home. As my consultant said yesterday, ‘it’s a matter of keeping the numbers low enough so that you don’t feel unwell’.
Unfortunately once it is there it it is there. Some times the numbers are too low to show on a lab plate but generally we just have to keep an eye that it is not getting out of control.
The first line oral antibiotic is ciproxin.
Long term nebulised antibiotics can be used to keep the numbers down, colistin, tobramycin and I neb ceftazidime
If the patient is not responding to oral antiiotics then IV with meropenem, ceftazidime, gentamycin or one of the others for a couple of weeks usually knocks it on the head.
I hope that info helps a bit. If Alan has a course of IV that could possibly clear enough of the pseudo out so that he can use just oral antibiotics if it starts up again. It is all very much a case of try it and see. Do remember that clearing the lungs on a daily basis of the mucus that the bug likes to grow in is probably the most important thing that Alan can do for himself.
Well versed as always LP 😊
Thanks a lot for your reply
Hi I have Brochiectisis,in both lungs and I have had Pseudomonus in my lungs for a few years now ,every antibiotic and even inhaled antibiotics will not clear it,I go into hospital 3-4 times per year to have I.V. antibiotic treatment,my last stay in hospital was three weeks ago and on that occasion my doctor told me I have developed another strain of Pseudomonus,so now I have two strains,I know that's not the best news in the world but I just wanted to share.I hope Alan recovers well.

Hi yes have had this dreaded ailment, it took about 5 weeks in hospital on various antibiotics but they eventually found it. It can be difficult to detect and you likely find you are on one of the strongest antibiotic so do not be surprised if you feel exhausted a lot, it takes it out of you something rotten. It will pass but unfortunately it does leave the lungs weakened so do be careful that you protect against other chest infections, get your GP to give you some "standby meds" so you start taking something quickly then go see the GP as fast as you can.
Unfortunately we are approaching the worst part of the year so don't take chances, do have the flu jab as soon as avilable.
