Feeling relieved after pip assessment today.

Feeling so relieved, had my pip assessment done today it went alright, the healthcare professional doing it was a nice lady, now it's just the waiting for results, she said it would be about 5 - 6 weeks. Here's hoping!

Was it a bad experience? I've r3ad and heard it can be quite daunting.

I've got my assessment this Monday and its a home visit. I don't know why they are coming to my house.

Hi mas7656, it wasn't a bad experience at all, not sure why your having a home visit either, I thought home visits were only if you requested it. Think it helped having my companion/friend with me and the lady asking the questions was a lovely lady, it's just the waiting time now. Thank you Dedalus.

My son has just had his completed by a professional who helped him on Thursday while I was with him in the flat he got a month ago having help from carers and I must say the lady was very knowledgeable and seemed very confident that things would be fine. Hope you get a good result.

Hi Diane11270, no problem she first asked questions about my medical history the medications I take, their side effects, how my illnesses effects me doing everyday tasks like washing and bathing, eating and drinking and so on. She was very understanding and knowledgeable about my COPD that helped put me at ease, their was a few simple movement exercises she asked me to stand/sit and do, I could just say if anything caused me pain to do, but it was okay. Hope that helps, do you have an assessment coming up or know someone who does?

Thanks for that, I haven't applied yet but thinking of doing So but I'm nervous that they will say I'm not 'ill' enough if that makes sense. I've heard in the past that people have to be virtually at deaths door and still get refused! I'm quite a nervous person so i don't need extra stress of this added to my problems xx

Joking aside, the fact you are of a nervous disposition and worried about applying must affect you day to day which impacts on health. That in itself could 'score points'. Can you get to see a copy of a successful claim and response which shows points scored? That breaks things down and you may not realise you had overlooked something. Take all the advice from here they know their stuff xx

Thanks for that, I am a very nervous person to be honest, even more so since being on oxygen these last 19 months, I can't even go out on my own because I get stressed about it xx

I understand your feeling nervous, Like yourself i'd also heard the worst, I was very nervous and anxious, but I can say don't pay attention to whatever your hearing,the best way to allay your nerves is to get correct and up-to-date information to help you with applying, this forum is good, talk to people on the british lung foundation helpline, 03000 030 555 the advisors are very helpful and will signpost you to extra information. I could suggest to you having a read of this website scope.org.uk/support/disabl... as well as the Citizens Advice Bureau citizensadvice.org.uk/benef... if you would like, I can say preparation is the key along with talking to friends and the right people, it's what helped calm my nerves and anxiety.

Hi, so glad it all went well for you and fingers crossed you get it. Can I ask how long after finding out which company was doing your assessment did you receive your interview date ? I was told 3 weeks ago who is going to be doing mine but no date as to when yet. It’s so stressful. My friend who is very ill with a number of problems and can’t physically walk has had her car taken away from her as they said she wasn’t ill enough. She appealed but lost and is now going to court for it. Her doctors and consultants have backed her up and her OT. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and everyone else having to go through this xx

I know I can’t believe the things they have said she can do. They said she can walk 50 metres even though her bones are crumbling and the bones in her one ankle have just collapsed and she had to have metal plates put in and is plastered up to her knee. That’s her strong weight bearing leg too xx

I wrote a reply a while ago but deleted it because it’s not really helpful, but I had been reading about a campaign called something like A Step Too Far, it’s a MS campaign to get the 20 metre walking test changed back to a 50 metre walking test, as apparently it was arbitrarily changed to 20 some time ago. I guess a 50m test is better than the shorter distance but even with 50m it’s ridiculous. Where does 50m get you in real life? Probably not to a shop or a bus stop or anywhere practical. And, if someone can struggle to walk 50m are they then too exhausted or in too much pain to actually do anything else. Probably.

It just made me think of you and your friend, and everyone else here struggling with pip assessments, when I saw that article.

Thank you for your reply. I think the country has gone mad. I’ve got my own assessment next week and I’m dreading it. I’m on oxygen 24/7 and out of breath just talking let alone walking. It’s pointless worrying about it now. What will be will be I guess x

Hi Wendy_A, I wasn't told which company was doing mine I just got the date 3 months after applying, hopefully you get a date soon I know it's not an easy process especially with all other difficulties. Good luck!

Be careful when you attend the assessment, they observe you as you approach the assessment centre, they monitor how you walk into the room, note what you are wearing. They will put your identification on a desk to see how you pick it up.in my assessment I wasn't asked anything about my illnesses, just questions if I can wash my hair or can I follow a diversion. I lost my mobility allowance because I managed to walk from the car park to the assessment centre. The assessor has a standard set of questions to ask and doesn't take into consideration your illnesses. The assessor has no experience of your illnesses and are either nurses or paramedics.They won't answer your questions. The whole experience makes you feel humiliated, paranoid and distressed. I was made to sit on a dirty chair in the porch of a run down dirty building? The whole experience is degrading and you are not treated with any kind of compassion and respect. It took me five days before I opened my letter from the DWP, and their report says a different story to the forms filled in. Be careful of your interaction between you and the assessor as they're monitoring how you behave and respond.
