I don't know what a salt cave is but if the atmosphere is moist and the area used by a lot of people I would urge caution in the case of those with bronchiectasis. Infection is a risk in such places. Salt therapy can be safely achieved by nebulizing normal saline or in some cases, hypertonic saline.

It is good that you feel so much better after your experience. Salt is a chemical though - it is sodium chloride, chemically known as NaCl.

Hello Bella, I have bronchiectasis and nebulise saline. I have been interested in the salt caves which have popped up around the country because of the apparant benefits of salt therapy. Salt lamps, pipes etc have done nothing for me.

However, many do not appreciate that the nature of the damage in our lungs leaves bronchs very susceptible to the germs which other users may bring in with them. COPD is a different condition and although they naturally try to avoid infection they are not as vulnerable in such an enclosed environment as we are. I am with you in being cautious so unfortunately, much as I would like to try its benefits I am going to have to give these communal caves a miss - or build my own, now there’s an idea!

Hi mumofmums. You seem to think that I am criticising salt caves. I am not. However I do know my condition very well. We pick up germs breathed out by other people much easier than others, especially in confined spaces. When One sits in these places it is impossible to know what others are harbouring and increases by many fold the risk to us which is present in airborne germs in the world outside. I am envious of you being able to use a salt cave and hope that your symptoms continue to improve. I think my own salt cave would be a good idea. I have a steam room and that is really useful.

mumofmums My husband has used the Edinburgh Salt Cave and finds it very beneficial. People who don't know what it is shouldn't comment until they try it. Anything is worth trying if you are suffering with breathing problems and if it helps then it's a bonus. Hope you keep going and reap the benefits.

I did say that I have no experience of salt caves. I was not criticising them. It’s good that your husband finds them helpful. I was only speaking about people with bronchiectasis because I do have experience of this condition. I hope that’s ok with you.

Some people with bronchectasis have a big problem with Pseudomonas infection. It is found in water so a damp atmosphere could increase the risk of droplet infection. That is why I asked whether the air was moist. Also, some people with bronchectasis have immune deficiency so being in close proximity to other (maybe ill) people is really risky for them.

I have been to a salt room in Kenilworth. It has the walls made from Salt bricks and the floor is covered with salt crystal of some depth. Once the time starts it has dimmed lights and the sound of the sea, Plus the room is filled with a salt mist. They have very comfy reliner chairs and I have fell asleep. I have not felt better in the breathing but I have been very relaxed.
