Oxygen assesment
Hi
If it’s for Ambulitory oxygen therapy then it’s usual a six minute walk test, first with no oxygen then with oxygen increasing to reach a minimum desaturation of 90%/92%. The distance you walk will depend on you level of desaturation. All quite painless.
If for long term oxygen therapy then ABG blood test is required. Blood is taken from vein in your wrist, can be a bit painful.
If you find you need oxygen discus all the options with regard equipment.
Cylinder, liquid oxygen, portable concentrator for Ambulitory.
Static concentrator for long term oxygen therapy.
Hi Dion, here's the Nhs take on things and quite a good guide as to what to expect, forget the bit in it regarding lung function test which is not normally done on o2 assessment and you may be required to walk a set distance to check if you only need ambulatoty o2

Thankyou.
If you are borderline on your blood gases, and in our trust they normally only do the capillary blood gases from your ear you may be invited to repeat the exercise within a set period of time to check if they believe you would benefit from LTOT but they can normally sort your potential ambulatory needs on the day. x
Hi Dion3844o1 .
I just wanted to say, please don't worry. Take it easy and do let us know how you are doing. Have a good weekend.

Hi Dion, Relax and do Everything they say, Stone has it spot on. I sit here with my Oxygen on , For me it was/is a Life saver. Good Luck Hun XXXX
they took my blood from my ear but apart from that stone -uk is 100% bang on
Had my Friday and they have reduced my 02 so very pleased with myself. I was surprised after the heat was struggling a bit.
Greetings
Actually, Dion, everyone else is telling you porkies. The assessor will load you with chains and shackles, then make you climb up a very high wall before setting you off on a cross country route. You have a time limit and if you don't finish fast enough, you will be beaten severely with soggy spaghetti. After that, they will remove the statutory "armful of blood" then make you stand on your head in a corner until you arm fills up again.
This is all very positive assessment , and the treatment thereafter will make you feel SO much better that you won't complain. Should that idea even cross your mind -- perish the thought -- other joys await, which I will leave to your imagination.
Cheers and smiles

Hi, I had one of those tests just the other week. It's nothing to worry about, the assessors are very gentle with you, they'll want you to do a walk test of approx 6mins without oxygen then 6mins with oxygen in between a 30 min break. The readings will tell them whether you need ambulatory oxygen or static. Most of their equipment can be transported on your back (like a back pack) or on a small trolley.
