Thank you for contacting me recently and for raising concerns about DWP medical assessments. I share your concerns about punitive PIP assessments, and their impact on some of the most vulnerable people in society.

I was sorry to hear of your bad experiences with PIP assessments. Unfortunately, your experience is not unusual. The Disability Benefits Consortium recently found that eight in every 10 of those facing PIP assessments find it makes their health worse, and two thirds feel their claim was poorly represented by the assessor. These results are an indictment of the harsh assessments, and the miserable effect they are having on people who are trying to access much needed support.

As you may be aware, an independent review of PIP reported that claimants lacked confidence in the assessments, and called for greater transparency. The Government has said it will accept these recommendations, however I am concerned that the report findings have not been accepted in full. In addition, the High Court recently ruled that PIP assessments discriminate against people with mental health problems. As a consequence, the Government has said it will reconsider 1.6 million PIP claims. I believe this verdict is a damning indictment of the Government's approach to PIP support, which is a lifeline for many people.

A report by the Commons' Work and Pensions Committee also recently concluded that a sizeable minority of claimants are currently being failed by the assessments. The report highlighted there was a pervasive culture of mistrust around the process, creating a fear of face-to-face assessments and exacerbating anxiety felt by claimants. This evidence illustrates that instead of supporting people, the PIP process is often dehumanising, inaccurate and worsens existing health conditions.

I believe we must change the culture of social security to be supportive and enabling, which is why at the 2017 General Election I pledged to scrap PIP and Work Capability assessments. Labour will continue to argue for personalised and holistic assessments, which provide individuals with a tailored plan, which builds on their strengths and addresses barriers they face.

Good for you for being so proactive. That's a great reply from your MP, it's incredibly supportive. I read the article there about the woman. It's outrageous but somehow not totally surprising. It makes you wonder just who can qualify for any help. And makes a nonsense of the assessments and reviews. Who could seriously believe people in these circumstances don't qualify. Way to go for standing up for yourself. Sometimes it's too easy to just give up so respect to you for fighting back 👍

Well done JAS for contacting your MP and getting such a detailed reply. I just hope that something gets done and soon. PIP is too distressing and desperately unfair to so many and an alternative needs to be found.

The poor lady with cancer was hard to read and shameful.

You take care. Love the photo .....peace man! Xxxx

Hi sassy sad part is I agree with reforms but don’t agree with how sick disabled are treated.

This kids out there who don’t know how to work or be part of civilised society.

Don’t know what works about let alone know how to behave.

I was on yts when I left school and did learn me skills I could take forward.

Like I said I did agree but not targeting Most Vaunrable.

The point to remember here is it is very often not the assessment that is the problem but the the interpretation of the assessment by the DWP decision maker. They have little or no medical training. The nurse who assessed my wife gave a fair and in my opinion comprehensive report on my wife's various problems. I worked for 25 years in the NHS and could find no fault with her report. Sadly the decision makers interpretation of that report showed a total lack of medical knowledge and I believe that is the main reason why so many people are winning appeals when a doctor is on the panel. Happily my wife still gained the points she needed.

Glad yours went ok SHOULD not be luck of the draw really.

I know with mine never experienced such assessment WHERE was strictly yes or no answers let alone meet frustrated assessor.

Then to suffer threat’s if I talked about mental health IS shocking.

But like in article you would not believe it if had not read it.

I have helped a couple of people with mental health issues fill in their forms. It is my firm belief that two separate assessments are required completely separating physical and mental health. Physical limitations are fairly easy to prove and assess. However mental health is a far more complex problem. Part of the problem is the public's attitude and total lack of understanding. There is also a general lack of resources in the mental health system. It is a fight to get the help people need. I could go on and on about situations caused by a lack of understanding.

Thank you Jeff for staying on the subjeect. I found from passed experience the only way to get change is keep pounding on and questioning the way things are done, its not progress to my way of thinking it is going backwards to the days of soup kitchens. These benefits are needed for people to remain independent & buy the services that have been cut from NHS or Social services. Far too much money is going on fancy digital gadgets & paper than studying the needs of the frail, sick and most vulnerable. But Hey Jeff we still keep fighting to change their thinking on how to care for our less able selves and families.Keep up the good work you have my full support.
