No, not the same. In hospital you have the medication given to you several times a day from a drip stand but at home where the nurse comes once a day, it comes in a kind of cylindrical clear hard plastic container with a pump which delivers the drug into your system over a 24 hour period. You have a mid-line inserted into your upper arm - a more efficient kind of cannula - and a thin tube connects this to the container with the medication (which looks a bit like a bomb!). The container sits in a little bag which you can wear over your shoulder or like a bum bag.
Im on these for five days now under the Hospital at Home team, following 10 days in hospital. I know where Id rather be Good luck Dion.
I hope the abs you are taking at present work for you. 02 has given a good account when nurses come to your home. I am in the fortunate position of not having nurses come in. The downside is it is not a drip. I have a longline put into a deep vein and my first two doses at hospital, then I fill syringes with flush, mix and fill ab, followed by Heparin. It’s not difficult to do. A bit time consuming but for me not having to wait in for nurses and knowing you are getting the ab on time and staying at home is a huge bonus. I have a cf nurse comes in half way through to weigh, bloods and sample and go to the hospital at the end and have the long line taken out and see a consultant.
As 02 says I know which I would rather do.
If it comes to it I hope it works well for you and you will be able to stay at home. Huge bonus.

Thankyou take care x
My OH had intravenous treatment at home but it was not by infusion. He had a long line and the community nurses came in three times a day to inject the antibiotic. The treatment lasted for two weeks. As a carer I could deal with this but I would not have wanted to deal with an IV infusion at home. They need constant monitoring and attention.
