I take Incruse powder inhaler and have been told a powder inhaler shouldn't be used by someone with COPD, does anyone know if this is true.

Hi, incruse can be used to treat COPD but won’t immediately relieve breathing problems as you would need a rescue inhaler for that. Hope that helps a little. Xxxxx

Hi

Two thirds of inhalers are powder. Used by many people with COPD. Have you a source or is it someone’s opinion.

from a private health care lady who i'm quite friendly with, she says that powder based inhalers should not be used with COPD

Like Stone, I would like to know where your friend gets this from - I would imagine she has formed her opinion from a patient who had problems but who knows. Some people can find powder irritating to their airways though that might possibly be due to poor inhalation technique. I take Symbicort, a powder inhaler, used it for years and never ever had a problem. Im now going to read Pete's link :)

2 out of my 3 inhalers are powder which ties in with that.

Very interesting

Thanks for posting.

Personal experience: I've been using Incruse powder inhaler for a year (bronchiectasis, COPD, asthma) in addition to other things. Helps a lot.

Symbicort and Spiriva are both powder inhalers, think she has got her wires crossed! Been taking them for years without any problems.

My asthma nurse prescribed Incruse it to help get up mucus from my lungs along with my usual Symbacort, I don’t use it as I find no benefit in it exercise does a better job

I have COPD and asthma ---my pulmonary doctor has me on Incruse and Breo . (I just get nervous when the commercials here say "not to be used by people with asthma!!!!) so far so good except for the weight gain.

in reply topatmc1

hi there.....I'm just about to start on Incruse and after reading about possible symptoms I'm very wary lol . Your comment about weight gain has frightened me too lol as that's the last thing I need. I need to lose some desperately!! Are you saying Incruse has caused you to gain weight???

It could be unrelated (although I do think it is the steroids) and it could be the Breo or maybe being on both. I also needed to lose weight even before this. However, I am doing so well with the inhalers that I am far more active and I would hate to go backward in terms of my lungs and breath. I guess it's a sort of devil's bargain.

I'm trying to get back to weight watchers and I'm adding more activities to my pulmonary rehab 3 (After I went to regular pulmonary rehab they have an additional course at the big facility here in Chicago ---I go twice a week and have monitored exercise , strength and endurance building . The pulmonary instructor also has classes in balance and Nordic walking which I'm also taking).

I'm hoping that I can get control of the cravings and ravenous appetite and that the extra exercise will help. My sister's dog had the same reaction to being on steroids so she (the lab) gets a can of green beans added to her food to fill her up --- lol I'm ready to try that myself.

I laughed so much re the labs green beans....I will have a few cans too please . I need to lose about 3 stones. I'm so inactive the weight has crept up on me over the years. I was given a letter to pass back to the nurse who wrote it and listed amongst my medical conditions of heart and lung , diabetes etc was the awful word OBESE plus the first sentence of her report said ' I see no evidence of weight loss' which took me aback as she had never seen me before and I was sitting behind a small desk in my home. Trouble is criticism makes me want to reach for the cake tin. However all that aside as you said it's more likely to be the steroids in the inhalers plus the pills which is how my weight soared in the first place when I was given lots of steroids when I was struggling to breathe. In my innocence I had no idea why all food was suddenly delicious and I was permanently starving. IVe gone from 7.5 stone to 13.5 over the last 12 years.

I'm sorry I have rambled on! One more thing, I have now been inspired to incorporate some exercise into my days after reading how it has benefitted so many on this site and I am optimistic about Incruse instead of negative. THanks lol .

Good luck with all your classes. I attended pulmonary rehab a couple of times here in Scotland so I'll replicate some of the exercises and take it from there on my new fitness regime.

'byeeeeee :))

I added half an inch to my height just so I was overweight instead of obese!

Lol good thinking :)

I haven’t got COPD so I can’t tell you. There are so many on the market. They are cheaper than evohalers. I personally don’t like powder inhalers, Powder sticks on the pallet and in the back of my throat. I prefer to fit the evohaler in the aerochamber so it goes further down the lungs.

in reply to

This is what I do, Happylondon, it's easier with the aero chamber, just need to have a gargle with water and spit after to get rid of the bit that always sticks in the throat. I have COPD as well as asthma, so I have the Ventolin and follow it with Flutiform med.

It is one of the best inhalers to use these days, one of my inhalers was changed to incruse just before Christmas, it works extremely well. Always remember to hold your breath for a few seconds to let the medication get deep into your lungs.

My issue with powder inhalers is that because I have a or of mucous at the back of my throat the powder gets stuck as doesn’t enter the lungs
