NAC
Hi vonnie I'm the same got mine off amazon don't know much about it but thought I'd give it a try I'm gonna wait for your answers first I think see what others think
Hi Vonnie50
We are from the uk but my husband, who has severe emphysema, was taken ill iwith a virus infection and hospitalised when we were in Switzerland and interestingly they used NAC instead of his normal carbosysteine as one of his medications. The brand they used is called Fluimucil 600mg and it dissolves in water so you drink it. My husband said he preferred if because it was taken in water so it gets into your system faster and also because it's taken once in the morning so you aren't coughing up mucus at night.
I found ithis brand on the web but not sure if it is available in the uk.
Think NAC is well worth trying if you can find a brand that suits you.
Best wishes
Corin
My doctor prescribes me Fluimicil in need, as described below by another member. Responses to medicines vary a lot and I have no general opinion or advice to share. For me, although I take it when doc prescribes it, it doesn't do a lot! But others may have better responses. I'd say, give it a try. It won't do any harm.
So confusing what to take ect
I'd say just take it for a while and see if it improves your symptoms or well-being. No harm in trying.
Yes True worth a try 👍
Forgot to say you should maybe check with doc or respiratory nurse whether you need it or not! It might be irrelevant for you. I'm told to use it during and after exacerbations. As I said, it doesn't do much for me. But others have different experiences.
Hi Vonnie,
It takes a while to acclimatise to the diagnosis, mine was in March, so each day is a positive step, but the most important step I took was (after reading about it here) was buying NAC from Holland & Barrett!. The effect was quite pronounced after a week, no more thick sticky phlegm, able to clear congestion much easier now, so breathing much easier. The key is not to use it as an 'emergency' dilator, as its benefits build up over time, so should be taken at the same time each day, so I take 1200 Mg a day by X 2 600 Mg capsules.
