If you are doing a lung function test (spirometry test) you'll be doing a lot of breathing in and out and at times with a lot of force into a small machine called a Spirometer. Your nose will be pegged shut. 😳
I usually make sure I don't eat before the test as having a full stomach doesn't help. Also avoid tight clothing. I am advised not to use my inhaler that day but bring it along for after the test. I'm not sure if you were advised the same. Maybe it's different for me.
I find the technician is usually quite encouraging. They try and push you to give your best shot. If you start feeling really unwell or dizzy please let them know.
Post testing I find I have little or no energy left. So, I make sure I have nothing much to do afterwards. Some hospitals have given me a print out of the test there and then. Others pay more attention to "regulations" and say you must get them from the doctor. I would ask in any case. Please do relax. It's really not too bad.
Your test will be done by a technical specialist at the hospital. I went for my first one around this times last year. If you go on to YouTube there are a number of videos which show you what to expect. I found them very useful. From experience you are not given the results there and then. Much better discussing them with the consultant.
Thank you all for your responses. I have just got home after having the full lung function test. I was asked to sit in a glass booth and to blow in a tube and then sit in another chair and do another test.
The technician wouldn't allow me to have a print out and said I had to wait for my appointment with the consultant. However, I did ask for my FEV1 and FVC readings and he gave me the following:-
FEV1% = 2.4ltr
FVC = 2.63ltr
I used an online calcualater and entered in my age, height and readings and it puts me at 59% predicted.
