Hi everyone.. I'm due to start driving again soon after a long road(excuse the pun) to where I am now health wise .. unfortunately I'm now on 24/7 oxygen which is something I never needed when i last drove .. my question is do I need to inform DVLA or will motobility do so?? Or do I still need permission to drive as not sure if motobility covers this b4 allowing me to be a driver ..Oh and can anyone tell me costs of a hoist to help me lift my mobility scooter in and out of the boot as it's far too heavy..all answers much appreciated thanx mel xππ€

DRIVING π WHILST ON OXYGEN
Hi
There no restrictions on driving with oxygen. If using cylinder they have to be secure. In the well behind the front seats is suitable lying flat. Any spare cylinders should be secured in the boot. Iam into my fourth year of driving with oxygen. I use my own portable.
The information pack that you got from your oxygen supplier explains more.
If you have a Motability vehicle you can have a hoist fitted by a approved installer.
I have just ordered my next vehicle plus hoist the four way 80kg is costing Β£175. This allows them to claim back the VAT on the vehicle.
You will have to speak to mobility about having one retro fitted at that price.
Oh thanks alot stone_UK ..I already have the car from motobility but was unable to drive it due to my health hence no hoist .. sorry to throw another question your way but do u think it's possible to get one fitted or wud that have needed doing b4 i took collection of the car .. I don't want to ring the car supplier as they initially promised a hoist free as part of the deal.. then went back on the whole deal in turn causing the manager to get us a complete different model with no hoist! (through no fault of the poor manager) So again any suggestions welcome gladly .Thanks ever so much mel π
Hi
The answers are at bottom left.
motability.co.uk/informatio...
You may not get one at cheaper price,as when you have fitted at time of renewal. When is your next renewal.
If you speak to your local installer they may have used units available. You can find on E-bay but no guarantee of suitability, plus the cost of fitting.
Thanks for your help I appreciate it
Got another year and half until my renewal unfortunately ..
Hi
Is the vehicle suitable for you needs considering you now need oxygen, and a mobility scooter with easy access for loading and unloading.
Maybe mobility will allow a early exchange ?
Worth a call.
That's a really good idea because it's not allowing me to get out and about as can't get my scooter out and in I have to rely on others so will give them a call ... U are so helpful on this site so thanks
The answers you are for I have just been through and the following might help
1) if you order your new car with the hoist fitted before you take delivery you get everything tax free, the car, the hoist. Taking delivery with it fitted allows you qualify for disability concession
2) your hoist 150kg will cost in the region of Β£1000 tax free
3) as someone has already said there is no problem driving whilst on oxygen
Hope this helps Kermit and good luck
Kermity.i should have mentioned that I am not entitled to moto ility due to my age
Yes
Thankyou winebuff you have been most helpful ..shame motobility won't provide due to your age !
Glad you are driving again Lam Sis π
Thank you xxxπ
Hi Kemety, as Stone says, there are no restrictions re driving with oxygen but you do need to inform your insurers that you are carrying oxygen. My insurers just made a note of it on my policy but it didn't cost anything. There was a note about the need to do this in the pack I received when I first started using oxygen.
Helen
Thanks Helen you have been so helpful Mel xx
I have stickers on my windscreen saying I have oxygen in the car. It doesnβt hurt to make others aware. Enjoy your driving. I still do
Thanks that seems like a good idea .. Oh I have waited and fought long and hard to get myself at least driving again ...this time a year ago I was fighting for my life so a huge sign on the roof of the car saying this car and its owner runs on oxygen would be quite fitting if not ..funny ! Take care Mel x
Hi SpinningGwenny, the information I received from Air Liquide states that there is no need to display a sticker and goes on to say, "displaying one may give misleading information to the emergency services". Not sure what this means but I have gone with their guidance and not displayed a sticker.

Hi Mel,Love your new picture and so glad you are driving! I am very very happy for you! Xo
Hi Lynn thanx xx so nice to hear from u again... how are u ?? Xxx
Sorry Lin spelt it wrong the 1st time xx
Hi Mel.
I just got my license renewed. Here in Japan there is no restrictions when driving with oxygen. The lady behind the counter did cross examine me with questions about whether my doctor has ever advised me against driving. I found it a little intrusive but I am guessing she was just making sure. I'm glad you're driving again. xx ππ
Hi Cas thanx for replying xx yes so glad I'm going to be back behind the wheel but just the small problem now of my mobility car is not ideal for my needs now as when I got it my health wasn't as bad as now and my primary driver was driving me anywhere I needed to go ... since then though (19 months ago ) my health has taken a battering to say the very least and now need oxygen and a scooter to get about which has become increasingly difficult as the scooter is just too heavy to get in and out of the boot and my nominated driver is also unable to help with lifting it in and out ... a hoist has been mentioned but although quite reasonably priced 2nd hand I'm not sure how much the fitting of it would cost.Im really going to have to start making some inquires with mobility and my car supplier as obviously I'm sure I would have to get it fitted through them possibly?? Hope you and Chom are well love mel xπππ
Hello Mel.
I am sure they can be fitted. I noticed in Japan there are lifts in the back of the car to lower the scooter to ground level π so no manual lifting necessary. Perhaps they have similar? I hope it works out quickly and smoothly. Hang in there. Spring will be coming soon.
Love from Chom and I.

Hi yes that's the hoist I mentioned in my reply but it's whether they allow me to add one to the car as if I have to go through my car supplier it will cost alot I should imagine .. Thanx for your reply as usual very grateful xx I'm going to ring and see what motobility suggest Cas xxx Mel xxπ΅ππ
Ok just back from dr. Glad to see you too! And driving! Have so much fun Mel xx
