Diet Help for COPD sufferer

As I said in my first post yesterday I am going to be asking a lot of questions but I will try and keep them to one or two a day:)

My first question is regarding COPD diet and food. I have been reading a lot about what you can and cannot (or should not eat) and find a lot of contradiction out there on the web. So does anyone know of a good cook book (and meal planning) that is available out there which is quick easy and gives guidance on what to eat or not, as the case may be. My working life is a bit crazy in as much as I live in Bahrain and travel daily to Saudi Arabia, so I leave the apartment at between 04:30 and 05:00 in the morning and return around 18:30 in the evening which as you can imagine does not really allow much time for anything else.

Hi Yes perhaps - My diet help is specific to COPD and not general healthy eating - I guess I missed that so will edit the post. I will certainly see if I can find anything in the Healthy eating section that may be of use to me. Thanks for taking the time to reply

Thanks Gerald - interesting article and Graphic. Thick Mucus is a current issue for me and I am struggling to loosen it up. Have been prescribed ACC Long to help with it.

Not sure this is available in the UK except for use as a remedy for Paracetamol overdose:) but is readily available here in Saudi over the counter (as are most other of the Meds I need to take).

Hi Andy. Just follow a healthy eating plan with plenty fresh chicken, fish, fruit and vegetables and avoid the junk foods. I personally don't avoid dairy, but I do drink a lot of water (including soda water and tonic water). 😊😊😊

Thanks Pam - Being in the middle east chicken is probably the most regular meat that I have - I do not eat fish and really never have done just not keen on the taste - here there is a lot of fish (with strange shapes and names) so I suppose I need to find something I can tolerate the taste of.

One issue with food here is that the majority is imported so for fruit and veg it is either not ready or over ripe, chicken is locally produced but is generally the size of large pigeon so not a lot of meat. Usually buy chicken breast but sometimes wonder about it. I also have some issues with the hygiene in some locations.

I very rarely eat red meat, pork is available but only in special locations and is very expensive:) just multiply the UK price by 3 or 4 depending on the cut:( I am eating cheese and I love the strong soft cheeses camembert, gorgonzola etc. I think these may be the worst of cheeses for us folks.

Water is a necessity here as temperatures get above 40C most days (except in winter when it falls to a chilly 16-18C) and above 50C occasionally.

Thanks for the advice I will be doing so (I hope). Just need to find out some ways to prepare foods for the week so I don't have to cook in the evenings but reheat or get something out of the freezer. Hence the request for a good cook book. I guess I could find a chicken recipe book and substitute in the recipes:)

I also use Tonic water but I add a certain ingredient which makes it much more palatable, if frowned upon in certain countries:)

Good luck Andy. Looks like you will have to get inventive 😊. Don't forget the humble egg, very versatile. Why don't you try an Asian cookbook. Asian food is mostly quite healthy and freezes well. Have fun, I hope that you find something suitable. 😊

Hi

Look at

bing.com/search?q=recipes+f...

If you type COPD cook book into your search box there are plenty of options, mainly USA biased.

Hi,

Thanks for that - had not thought about it as being in the Middle East a lot of sites are blocked so rarely use the internet for searching. Even for here I am having to use VPN:) I will give it a try though stranger things have happened and I might even have a result.

Hi Andy, are you overweight? If so then I'd recommend you read Dr Michael Mosely's Blood Sugar Diet, it's very good. There's also a recipe book The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet Recipe Book which is excellent, written by two GPs. This one has suggestions for items to keep in your store cupboard, ie different spices, herbs, canned lentils, chickpea or beans for protein. When you are limited in what you can buy/eat I think it's really important to make food as tasty as possible. I don't eat red meat often, chicken, fish & sometimes venison are my staple. With different spices, lemon juice, herbs &/or coconut milk I can eat chicken almost every day of the week. I make larger quantities, eat one portion, freeze one or two & eat another a couple of days later. If I didn't eat fish I'd have a go at tofu, you should be able to get that there.

Avoid the tropical fruits if you can, they are heavily sugar laden. I've lived in Saudi in the past, six years in Libya too so I understand the limitations & the heat.

If you smoke please stop & allow your lungs to clean - when we were there everyone smoked in the workplace & it was horrendous, I hope that's changed. Good luck. Peege

ps don't forget the exercise which is so vital for lung issues!

Hi Peege,

Thanks for the info, I am a little overweight but not much (at least I like to think so) 6ft and 91kilo in normal clothing (T shirt and Jeans, mobile, wallet etc., included as they do not seem to want to weigh without them here:)) but I think I need to drop some of it around the middle if you know what I mean. Stop Smoking Plan in place but not easy after 52 yrs:( e-cig on stand-by.

The place has changed over the last few years regarding smoking now it is banned inside and the cost of cigs. has doubled twice in the last year so now sitting at around 4.50 (pounds) a pack but still the local smoke like the Flying Scotsman Steam train - crazy place:)

Going to start Yoga and Tai Chi next week all being well and walk a lot when the dust is not too bad and the temperature is moderate.

Andy
