Bronchiectusis

Hi I was wondering if anyone else often gets sharp cram like pains in the chest. I often get it when doing my shoe laces or just bending over I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on reducing mucus. As I have this condition in both lungs left is bad and often wake up with a blood like taste. Is this also common

Hello Carkeasabellacolin, I suffer with bronchiectusis and I do get chest pain and sometimes without doing anything. The mucus on my chest was hard to cough up, so my doctor put me on Carbocisteine and I find it really good. I don't know about your blood like taste when you wake up in the morning. If I were you I would go and see you G.P. I hope it all gets sorted for you ✋️😊

Thank you very much . It's reassuring as I was concerned . Especially like you said without doing anything it often comes.

I too get chest pains - I find that it's my body signalling that I have mucus that needs coughing out.

I agree with Stumpy, as for the blood taste, best to see a GP and get that checked just to be sure.

I have had bronchiectasis for years, have dreadful chest pain, not just when doing something but when in bed resting. It seems like it is something we have to put up with. I also take Carbosisteine which helps, but also prescribed by my doctor a flutter device. This loosens the mucus and makes it easier to clear. If you can't get them on prescription they are about £50 to buy.

Good luck xx

I used to feel sharp cramp like pains in my upper abdomen when bending over or doing up my shoes and found it was due to reflux. Also lying down can make the reflux worse and it’s best not to eat at least three hours before going to bed. The taste you get may be the acid. I have a hiatus hernia and take Omeprazole. I don’t get these pains any more as diet and the PPI keep things under control. I also have bronchiectasis which can be affected by reflux (gastric oesophageal reflux disease). Carbocisteine helps the mucous, drinking lots of fluids which dilutes the mucous, and I also have a flutter device.

Best wishes x

Coughing up the mucus is the most important part of Bronchiectasis. It is manageable and Carbocisteine will make it thinner and therefore easier to cough up. As the morning is the most energetic time, I always have a coughing session before lunch and that brings up the most 'meaty' stuff which is what could become infected if it is left there. Exercise helps to bring it up. It can be hard work and exhausting to manage but well worth it. I can't sleep on my back because of coughing so this is the easiest way to have a proper session of clearing it. It does vary from day to day but anything which is not just 'fluff and bubbles' but has little beige or green globules in it is 'Bingo'! Good luck.

All the advice has really helped and the flutter device seems like a must 😁😁

Do not for heaven's sake buy a Flutter. Ask your GP for a prescription 😉.

If you really cannot cough up the mucus then there is one further method of loosening the gunk. A nebuliser and vials of saline. Lidl sold me mine for about £35.00 and the last lot of saline vials were about a fiver.

As for your original question I too have Bronchiectasis and I cannot bend forward at all.
