A paper on e-cig use in COPD:

I know the use of e-cigs can be a heated debate but I felt I should share this particular and recent paper on the subject as it specifically applies to their use by people with COPD: link.springer.com/article/1...

Read this but until someone proves to me that e-cigs are worse than smoking I will continue to support it. What non smokers and ex smokers seem to forget is that for smokers it's not usually a choice between smoking, e-cigs or no smoking. It's a choice of smoking or e-cigs. Of course the ideal is not to smoke anything but when it comes down to it e-cigs are better than smoking.

Those who live in the real word understand this.

Why do 'never smokers' want to use them for? To look cool? Chuck a bucket of cold water over your head, that'll make you look cool. Make you look wet too. Drips!

in reply to

That's a different issue poemsgalore. The vast majority of people use them to get off smoking which is fine.

I know, I have no problem with that, just those who have NEVER smoked before using them. Seems daft to me.

total agree with Lil on this, this dare i say flimsy report fails to mention that without the availability of e-cigs many of the people mentioned in the report would have continued to smoke cigs and would have done far more damage to their lungs than they may be doing now with e-cigs......................skis and scruff

in reply to

Totally agree with you lil there's a choice obviously my choice is to vape rather than smoke....i felt terrible when smoking now I can breath run and jump if I want to lol the only thing that got me to quit fags xxx

I live in the real world.

Diagnosed with c o p d been in hospital twice this year already with pneumonia.

Like an idiot carried on smoking.fifty a day for many years.

Whist on the ward at my last visit, specialist told me that at least two of the other patients would not be going home.

Same age as me made me think.

Quit smoking completely four months ago,no vaping no e cigarettes no patches,I use nicotinell lozenges about three times a day and have smashed it.

Don’t you get the fact that if your lungs are badly damaged anything you breath into them that is not natural will do you harm.

Don’t make excuses just quit.

As a complete aside, all of the professionals helping me are even more helpful now I have quit.

I believe people have - and should always have - free choice. I gave up smoking with Champix but I only stopped because I couldn't face telling my non smoking family that I had COPD while I was still smoking. Had I not had the kids, or if they too had been smokers, I am sure I would have continued smoking - I loved it and felt that it was very much a part of who I was. Obviously ten years down the line I am very glad that I stopped and have no desire to ever resume the habit - but I still think that each of us will approach our COPD and our life in the way we choose and that is how it should be. I posted the paper because it is the first I know of that addresses the issue from the COPD angle. It is there to inform - not to judge - and each individual should continue to make their own informed choices.

I understand where you are coming from and yes if the sale of tobacco and e-cigs were totally banned then that would be great and the problem would be solved as in a matter of weeks or months no one would want to smoke anymore and they would be over it. But we live in the real world and these products are legal and available (and enjoyable) and so the choice still remains. Nicotine addiction is a condition in itself - nicotine is one of the fastest acting drugs available to man. People don't continue to smoke/vape because they are bad or morally weak, they smoke because they're addicted - addicted to a drug that governments and profiteers have been happy to sell without a care for those using them. So I still believe the choice is theirs, they should not be vilified in any way, but they should be helped or supported if or when they ask for it. Most of us on this site used to smoke - and most of us knew exactly how bad it was for our health yet we continued on and on for years - so I still say that none of us should judge or be critical of those still smoking or vaping.

i agree with most of what you say but would strongly disagree that banning anything would solve the problem. We have a world wide drugs addiction problem and no amount of banning of these products has achieved anything.in fact the opposite is often the case and liberalisation of banned products often gives society a means of controlling their usage and minimising the harm they do and also recovering much needed revenue to use for the good of all.good debating stuff though, well done for initiating the post..........regards skis and non smoking cat
