Hi Lin76. Emphysema is a part of COPD. People with emphysema or chronic bronchitis both have obstructive lung diseases and COPD is an umbrella term for both (standing for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), so you don't have two different things wrong it is just two different names for the same thing. :)

I never learned it that way. I learned that copd was blue bloaters and emphysema was pink puffers. The two are simular and disease process is simular but you can just have copd here in usa without being labled emphysema. I had copd first and just lately did they say the emphysema to me called it scaring and that copd was mord the aveoli in bottom of lung destroyed with copd. Ya see how different thkngs have been taught to usa. They do not say we have both. Crazy huh!

I know blue bloater copd and emphysema the pink puffers,I did not ever concider them as one. They are treated as one but i l only know them as seperate. They may call them the same, but even their appearance look different. Blue bloaters are dusky, usually big belly, and short of breath and pink puffers ard usually skinny pink and more severe short of breath. They present different. When both get bad then it don't matter if you group them the same but they do and are seperate disease processes. They both destroy the lung, but when chronic extreme full blown its all treated as one. They both are very bad. Exercise, not smoking, eatting right, and support like this group is key to all these different types of processes of the lungs from copd to cancer. From asthma to pneumonia, this site has so much to offer. I learn so much daily on here

They stopped using these descriptions quite some time ago when it was found they were not accurate.

I'm trying to get travel insurance so was interested in your post. If I list medication under copd it then says have you got emphysema. So you have to put in med again which looks like you take twice as much. I have emphysema so is it not copd. The cost is horrendous, lol

In my experience i would say first ask your dr for a list of your diagnosis you should carry that on you,and a list of meds and allergies. Also not that im an expert [edited] Did you work around caustic fumes or that type of environmental issues as that can cause scarring of lungs. I live in steel mill area so we have a lot of people with lung problems who never smoked. The best advice is just ask for print out from doctor what your diagnosis is. Idk why you get travel insurance,i do not even know what that is ha ha ive went galavanting around alot in my 30-late 40's so why do you have to tell them this info, isn't that personal, whats it for your personal belongkngs or your life incase something happens, how much do they look into this? Who needs to know..confused coz i nevef had any, plus from states maybe this is for when you travel very far. Sorry im a bit stupid on this matter as far as insurance.

Im not short of breath Tamariki. So my dr told me its good that i do not need them. I have them if needed. They do have side effects. I have other health problems and my one puffer messed with my heart. So if i get like a bad bronchitis attack/pneumonia i usually get so bad i end up in hospital. Since quitting smoking,so far so good. I for now do not need them. Best to you!

I do not know why i am getting updates on disease of copd. I got 4? I get it :) umbrella term. Really i honestly believe you. I do think you can have mild copd without emphysema. But i guess thats wrong. New news im learning more daily. Im not up to date on all, alot is new as far as how they umbrella things. I was laughing a bit as my last pack of Marlboros(empty) on the side had warning may cause emphysema, copd, premature birth and low birth weights. In Dominica Republic their umbrella term best on pack of cigarettes THIS WILL KILL YOU!!!!My first encounter with a doc with lungs on 1st pulmonary function said copd. First CT said copd and nodules ground glass opacity the last 3 said copd emphysema and ground glass opacity and scarring which once again the doc said you have copd and emphysema and possibly histiocitosis x Langerhans disease, then each one after said that. So the drs here differentiate between both. I do understand the umbrella term,i agree with that too. And Im sure that this umbrella effect is true. I think in usa they list each disease they can,so they can justify to insurance and billing and coding idk,but even on my paperwork with list of diagnosises they got it all listed seperately. Idk maybe they get paid more. In practice they use umbrella terms, but they present differently on assessment. What i use to do before be disabled wasn't a doctor and i was not a aid and we had to list each diagnosis. I was not billing and coding. I understand the umbrella term! I love learning
