Chlorine in the swimming pool

Hello everyone

I've just started doing aqua Zumba In the local pool and I felt quite tight on my chest just after the session and out of breath. Same the following morning but it eased away and the same happened the following week. I'm so out of breath when I leave I can hardly breathe.

I've done zumba before but never aqua and the thought occurred to me is it the chlorine and is it harmful for my COPD?

I just saw aqua Zumba and thought oooh lovely won't be as hard as normal zumba as the water holds me great! It's the inability to breathe after that's weird I leave the pool and struggle up the stairs hoping no one speaks to me and then can't wait to get in the car to escape

Yes done normal zumba and will join a class soon

I'm with you when I use the gym I use the back stairs to enable me to avoid the pool area and smell ...its not pleasant and I love swimming xxx

I do aqua fit I'm not affected by the chlorine but I think they always check and add more chlorine last thing at night if needed and this might be the reason. We also have aqua zumba but I don't think zumba works in water see if your local pool do a aqua fit hope this helps

There's an aqua for class an hour before which looks good but regardless of whether zumba works in the pool it's this chlorine thing! I'll try again on Wednesday and see if it's still the same

On holiday outside pools is best because they are cold and no chlorine- i'm quite surprised this has happened because I was so proud of myself doing exercise again 🙀

Hi there! You could always phone the leisure centre/pool and explain the chlorine issue and ask if they boost the chlorine at certain times(which I'm sure they do) and that may tell you when its fresh chlorine or when its been added several hours previously? Only a thought and perhaps a silly one?!?

Good luck and well done for even attempting Zumba- by pushing yourself,as long as its safe, you will see the benefits long term. So "well done!"

Swimming pools are now definitely on my "off limits" list. I cannot tolerate the chlorine fumes at all, not even for a few minutes before everything tightens up and I can hardly breathe.

Really!!! I have never experienced this before but I haven't been in a pool for a few years either!

I use bleach at home for extra cleaning and this doesn't affect me although I read bleach can make us worse

Unbelievable really!!!

SquirrelsHolt profile image

Yes 2Greys,I'm the same...can't get near to an indoor pool as one whiff of the chlorine and I'm just about ready to keel over! Outdoor pools are ok but since being on oxygen I've never tried swimming as the whole idea of oxygen, the tubing and H2O dont sit well in my mind and then the anxiety sets in!!! What a game eh? I was such a brilliant swimmer back in my youth......oh the memories!

"Everything tightens up" this is exactly how it feels upon leaving the pool almost like i'm squeezing air I have my blue inhaler at the side of the pool with my towel but it's not the doing Zumba in the pool that's painful - it's coming out afterwards and getting dressed feeling like I have no energy but you describe it well!

I'm going to go tomorrow night and ask what time they Top up the chlorine - if I dare 🙀

where i live the smell of chlorine has got very strong in our water supply to our home..so much so that i stoped using the shower and put a bath out on the balcony .. nice view.

Oh golly gosh,a bath on your balcony with a view.....what could be more wonderful ? (Obviously nobody can see you having a rub-a-dub-dub?)

What is the view then? I'm very jealous!!

in reply toSquirrelsHolt

ha ha ha...havent plumbed it properly yet.. still fill it up with the hose and when i let the water out it runs down over the balcony into the garden to water the plants.

the view is just the top of the trees in my garden and the exzotic plants that surround the bath ..nothing to be jealous about really 😏

sometimes i dont use it and just give myself a good hose down as my two boys wont get out.

am just going to get in now , my wife has put my normal bowl of fresh fruit with fresh cream on the table next to it for me..

mango, blue berrys, and papaya....

bon appetit...😛

Yes don't know whether it's the chlorine or not but I've not been swimming for a few weeks now and am feeling a lot better. Had been going a few times a week plus spa for relaxation for some years but afraid to take the chance now. That said I'm going to visit an outdoor pool soon and have my fingers and toes crossed. There are lots of different ways to exercise thankfully but you need to be well to participate.

Good luck x

One last attempt tomorrow it's such a shame though as zumba is so much easier in water! Had a leaflet through the door tonight about a local yoga class in my area!!! Coincidence or what?

I was at the London heart centre today (doing some work for them) and asked the clinical trial nurses and they said yes chlorine can affect your breathing but as it's not a private pool it may have more In than necessary and told me to try a pool that has saline in?

I am still wondering why chlorine has this affect on breathing for COPD clients???

Good luck for tomorrow! I've been at an outdoor pool today in the cold Scottish autumn and was fine. Confused? Local and yoga sound good to me. Take care x

I haven't been back to the pool for three weeks! My chest was getting so tight I ended up back at GP who said upon listening to my chest - no infection! Again this is what i'm told by doctor they listen and say your chest is clear? I was so out of breath on Monday and Tuesday I knew I had something lurking was it the chlorine that set it off or was it the flu jab?

Go said - no it wasn't the flu jab - how do u know? I ask! Because it can't be it must have been something else going on before u had the jab! Maybe the chlorine she said!

Not sure I believe it from three weeks ago but i'm wide awake at 5am unable to sleep wheezing - been given 5 days of prednisone steroids expecting the insomnia and depression as part of the course!! If the steroids can clear up the tight chest and laboured breathing ill put up with the side effects for five days!

So day two on steroids today - i'm working later so at least I don't have to get up and hit the rush hour .

I was given antibiotics too but told to only take steroids as flem is not coloured but saying this it's so hard to cough anything up! A slight cough during the night but i'm desperate to get it up whatever it is!

I think i'll definitely stay away from the pool for a while!!! 😷
