Chlorinated swimming pool and Bronchiectasis

Hello, I would like to know if swimming in chlorinated swimming pools, will effect or make my bronchiectasis worse.

I have had bronch all of my life. The chlorine in swimming pools has never adversly affected it. The swimming loosens the mucus though which is a good thing. Maybe someone who has asthma with their bronch might find that they react to it.

Yes, I have asthma and I'm sensitive to chemicals and can't cope with the chlorine in swimming pools. It was lovely when we lived in Germany as there were loads of outdoor swimming pools! x

some people are certainly more sensitive to chemicals and the smells than others. I know I am! Some swimming pools seem to used much stronger chlorine than others too so worth trying a few pools.

I'm pretty sure the main issue with water and bronchiectasis is MAC infection. My doc says no to hot tubs because the water is bubbling around. I swim all the time and don't seem to have issues. I stay away from aerosolized water in fountains and hot tubs though.

Am I crazy? Probably.

I have been swimming 3 times a week before and after my bronchiectasis diagnosis and noted no difference. I have been told swimming is good as it helps the breathing especially if you do crawl.

This question was raised on an another forum, the recommendation was try to avoid the pool during and for three hours after large groups of young children have been in the pool. Apparently chlorine and urine together creates uric acid which will aggravate the lungs.

I was told if you can smell the chlorine it’s because it’s having to work because there’s something in the water. I haven’t let Bronchiectasis stop me from swimming in pools. I try not to let the water get in my nose or mouth though.

Swimming is great all body workout, don't mix up coughing because you are exercising with irritation by chlorine. I love swimming!

I have asthma and bronchiectasis and swimming pools don’t seem to affect me apart from clearing the sinuses. Enjoy your swimming x
