I have had COPD since 2009, when it was first diagnosed with the symptoms after stopping smoking. I know, just typical. Anyway my question to you guys is "At the moment I am struggling with my breathing (as though I have a chest infection, which I don't believe I have), yet I'm always tired. Is this common as it's never happened before. I can sleep for 8 hours at night, and still have to have 1 hour in the afternoon. Is this common?"

Thank you for letting me join your forum.
Are you affected by the heat at all could be that
No I love the heat, but hate the cold. This is the first time this has ever happened to me.
Hi you are very welcome on here.
I hope you are feeling better too very soon. Take care. x
Thanks Lilaclil
First of all welcome. You could be describing me. Diagnosed after stopping smoking, breathless mostly at home (all precautions taken there) and I could sleep all the time. My GP said it's because I have asthma as well as Emphysema and this being allergy season adds to it all. I take an antihistamine tab once a day which I think contributes to it. Seems is just another one of the things to be put up with. I'm 57 btw x
Hi Andyt0253, I was diagnosed with COPD same year as you. Find the overpowering heat effects breathing. I too get very tired but put mine down to other illness and getting older.Who knows maybe it is the illness catching up on us, or causing the tiredness .

Welcome to the forum. Good that you have given up the cigs, keep off them. You will probably have problems with shortness of breath, it's a symptom of the dreaded COPD espelcialy after or during exercise or exertion. I don't think tiredness is uncommon I get it after a good nights sleep and can nod off during the afternoon even watching football.

Yes it is for me - I am a great believer that our bodies know what they need and if they need more sleep I say go for it and do not be worried about it - I sleep for about 10 hours at least one day a week and feel better for it Hope that helps xx
oh and sorry forgot to say welcome xx
Many thanks for all the replies, and the welcome notes. At least I'm not on my own with this then, which is a great help. Also age could be playing a part in it as I'm 69, and old age will catch us all up at some point in time.
Welcome Andy to the forum. I,too have been diagnosed with copd emphysema & experience fatigue usually mid afternoon. It's more physical than need for sleep so it helps me to lie down for an hour or so. I'm told this is very common with our disease. And congrats on getting of the cigs!
