Sticky cough

Advice please.

In a nutshell: cough that's lasted over 3 weeks. It's worse at night. I can only sleep on right side as it gets worse on left. It makes me cough till I retch, even coughing up blood on occasion. The mucus is stubborn to bring up. I've been to walk in centre and my chest is clear yet I'm still coughing.

Any advice welcome. Thanks. Ali

Have you asked your GP about it? I ask because he may be able to prescribe something for you to loosen the mucus. Many of us use carbocysteine to make mucus less sticky and easier to bring up. Drinking lots of water helps too.

I shall contact the GP tomorrow. I hope they can find out what's producing the mucus/phlegm. I'm healthy otherwise.

Many thanks yous for advice, Ali.

I have the same problem. I found that when my nose runs, I begin coughing. At times even the store or any place. I used vicks throat cough drops to quell it. They work sometimes but at night when my coughing is bad, I take a Sudifed nasal decongestant tablet. It dries my nose up and my cough stops. It is especially good at night.

I may give the sudifed decongestant a go me thinks.

Update:just seen Dr. They suspect I may have inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. She prescribed me salamol inhaler and prednisolone. She's also referred me for a breathing test.

Hello Alip 123456,

Have you been tested for COPD, emphysema, asthma, or even lung cancer?? A cough that does not stop is usually not good. A strong sign that something is not right.

I was sick with a cough especially at night. Went to Urgent Care. Was given some x-rays which showed misc. spots on my right lung. Went to the Cancer Center for more tests and was told I have small cell lung cancer. After many months of chemotherapy I felt very sick. Lethargy, nausea, lack of appetite, not to mention I lost every hair on my body.

Please see your doctor for any of these symptoms. It could be a life saver. God bless and many prayers for you.

Kathie

Hi Kate,

I hope you are feeling better now. I've been to Doctor since and I'm waiting for a referral for a breathing test. I was also prescribed salamol and prednisolone. After a day or so of taking them my chest has improved. However, I'm keeping a close eye on my coughing. I'll be straight back to that doctor if it still persists.

Thank you for you advice. I shall update once I've had the breathing test.

Al.
