Hello, I am new here. I have COPD, and currently take Spiriva Respimat (some help from this). I am quite often, and currently, suffering from my house being invaded by smoke by neighbours burning their stuff, I suspect from possibly slow burner, or it may even be a chimney. Trouble is I do not know where the source is, but it is very unpleasant for anyone, and particularly for someone with COPD. This has caused me to start looking to see if there is anything I can purchase to clean the air in my home. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP BY RECOMMENDING SOMETHING. From some brief reading on this subject, perhaps an air purifier might be best, but would be so grateful for advice. MANY THANKS.

Cleaning the air in my home.
Have you tried contacting your councils Environmental Health Department to see if they can help.
But before that is there any chance you can find out where the smoke is coming from and ask if they can do something to stop it. Years ago the owners of the stables behind my house burned their straw and manure waste, day and night, and I had to call the council, but it did cause a bit of ill feeling between the stable owners and my family.
I inherited a bit of money and invested in an expensive air purifier to add to the cheap one I had already, but I don't know if it's made a difference or not, sorry.
I hope you find a solution soon . Best of luck.
hello there. I think that you should go to the source of the problem. Identify where the smoke is coming from and contact environmental health at your local council. Polluting the air is illegal. There are lots of good air purifiers on the market but you will be fighting a very expensive losing battle if you don't stop it at source. Good luck.
Do your neighbours know you have copd ? I,d mention it to them & then if they don't show you any consideration go to your council coz the 1st question they will ask is have you spoken to your neighbour about it . Good luck.
Hi
The first thing is find the cause, the fumes can be carbon monoxide which is deadly. You shouldn't get any Ingres of smoke or fumes from a property next door if the equipment being used is up to standard.
It must also be effecting them as well.
Check your loft space for leakage around any chimney breast or dividing wall.
If it's some kind of wood burning stove it should have its own independent and sealed flu liner protruding above the roof line.
If it's a slow/all night burner it should have sealed chimney liner or flu pipe.
Air purifier as a last resort or in the future.

Unlikely to be very effective unless source is found and rectified.
If your home is being affected by smoke and fumes then report it as a "Statutory Nuisance" to Environmental Health at your council. They have a statutory duty to investigate it and to stop it. This applies to all smoke emissions regardless of the source or time of day, if causes you a nuisance then it has to stop.
Hello livegood76 Please keep us updated with any developments won't you? @ stone uk and @2greys greys have both given excellent comments,so with all that information,I really hope you can put in place a strategy that will once again make your breathing, not such a blinking challenge. Wishing you the best of luck.
i would speak to my neighbour frist before i do anything else.
if it is ( and you dont know for sure ) coming from there home they probley not aware that its affecting you.
most people would be nice and helpful to you specially if they knew that you had breathing difficulties.
if it was say a barbeque that they sometimes had in there garden and it was affecting me ..then i would close my windows as it would only be for a short time. but as this is not something you can see and avoid it really is best to talk before you complain.
Just a suggestion. When you approach any of your neighbour, be aware that they may not know what COPD means and the effect on your life and damaged lungs, so explain that your lungs be are damaged already and that smoke irritates and makes breathing harder.
