I would never dare to order a steak & kidney pudding in a restaurant. Goodness knows what they would come up with. The last home-made one I had my Mother made. I seem to remember it involved steak, kidney, suet, cotton cloth and a steamer and other things. The whole procedure was a bit of a ritual taking hours. Now I make do with little Fray Bentos jobbies, 90 seconds in the microwave oven!!
Give me a day's warning. Actually quite simple to make. But it helps to have an Aga, six hours simmering in the simmering oven. Mashed potato, spring greens.
Oh please stop it - you're making me drool! I don't have an Aga🙁 do have a very ancient steamer though - but it's June we should be thinking 'salads', if only it weren't so bloomin' cold and wet!
Hi Don1931, had to make a serious comment on this one, earlier this year I ordered a pie in a top chain restaurant who charge £12 for it with potatoes or chips and received something like your poem suggests. My daughter in law says pie has top and bottom shortcrust pastry with filling in not soup with a floater Hate to think what we would get if we asked for steak & kidney pud
Are you kidding me, a floater on top?? Gross, what happened to 'elf n safety'?
I don't touch Fray Bentos with a barge pole either- their tinned meat pies now smell like tinned 'hot cow jobbie' to me- my uncle used to love them, but holy cow, these smelt vile and we're nothing like we used to be during the 70's - they are vile!
Waitrose do the best commercial steak n kidney puddings. Some times lidls get them in as a 'special' and they're good too. Sainsburys always lacking in flavour what ever they produce. But nothing comes close to my grans home made puddings or pies.
