Am interested to know if anyone has used Reishi? If so, was it beneficial?

Thank you.

Dr. Andrew Weil, an American GP, as well as an alternative medicine guru, recommends it (or cordycep mushrooms), as well as CoQ10. I wrote that I have been taking the CoQ 10 for about a month and swear I notice an improvement in my oxygen sat. level.

Apparently, it improves oxygen exchange at the cellular level. He claims that the mushroom may slow the progression of emphysema.

I went for my second spirometry the day before yesterday. I get so anxious and was dreading the whole process. Three years ago, my FEV1 was 43% which put me in the severe category. I was expecting it to have dropped but it is the same, with no need for oxygen. The fellow who performed the test, as well as the six-minute walking test, told me that I had worked hard and my results showed it. I asked him what my FEV1 was and we looked on the computer screen - it was 61%. I said "it is up" and left very happy.

Yesterday, when I saw my pulmonologist, I was shocked when she said "your lungs are 'shitty' - was shocked by her unprofessional manner. I responded that that was not what the technician said and she sloughed that off. She said you are the same as three years ago. So, in my mind it is good that there has been no deterioration but to be told another number; so happy I told my family and friends and then... I plan to speak with the technician to find out why he said that and I distinctly saw the reading on the screen!

I've decided to not concern myself with the medics so much and just look after myself. I must add here that 'ageism' is alive and well within the medical community (my opinion). Since reaching 70 years (am now 73 years), it has been so evident.

We are all different and with different experiences but just wanted to relay this recent one. Apologies for this being so long.

" Early research suggests that taking reishi mushroom does not shrink lung tumors. However, it does appear to improve immune function and quality of life in people with lung cancer."

"Reishi mushroom extract is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth appropriately for up to one year.

Reishi mushroom is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth in a powdered form for more than one month. Use of powdered reishi mushroom has been associated with toxic effects on the liver.

Reishi mushroom can also cause other side effects including dryness of the mouth, throat, and nasal area along with itchiness, stomach upset, nosebleed, and bloody stools. Drinking reishi wine can cause a rash. Breathing in reishi spores can trigger allergies."

Thank you for your detailed response. I would think that if one has allergies, it would not be wise to take.

The site I quoted from has much more info. The thing I took from it was that there are a lot of claims but not much research has been conducted.
