I am sure someone will be along to give advice on nebulisers and which one worked for them etc. My only concern about nebulisers at home is infection. A number of recent studies have found that unless cleaned regularly and some parts changed on a regular basis then a build up of bacteria can occur. I worked in a health care setting and as part of an infection control study we swabbed every home nebulisers that people brought in with them. 40% were found to have bacteria on them which could cause infection. So please ensure you follow the instructions about cleaning and storage between using them. I hope your nebulisers help you.

Pete suffers with mucus that makes him choke often. He had mucodyne which helps and mucoclear via nebuliser. The one he uses was supplied by the Royal Brompton and he bought one from Lidl done months ago.

If you do need to buy then do some price comparisons online and see which one is best. Lloyds Chemist may have them online too.

Good luck and hope it helps with your problems. Xxxxxxx

There are only two ways to get rid of copious mucus.

Antibiotics which are appropriate to the bacteria which is producing it.

Coughing it up! This takes masses of effort and there are various breathing tecniques and devices to help you do this.

substances such as mucodyne and even inhaling saline simply help to thin the mucus. If you are not getting the mucus out of your body or having the infection which is producing it dealt with by the correct antibiotic you will end up feeling that you are full of even more gunk.

Your GP doesn't seem to be on top of the problem

You know, having gone through dealing with trying to extract mucus from my little ones with their frequent colds and having been told there's not much they can take by way of medicine, I have come across these things that have helped tremendously 1) a nasal aspirator which connects to ( please don't laugh) a vacuum cleaner( !) of the standard type with a hose. It basically reduces the vacuum's suction to a steady manageable tiny amount and really helps to suck out the mucus especially the kind that gets stuck to your throat. You can get it on amazon or eBay for about 13+ pounds 2) I would recommend you try taking 2 tea spoons of raw ( cold pressed) organic coconut oil ( the kind they sell at Holland and Barrats) a day, for a week or two as part of your diet and see what difference it makes. It's naturally antiseptic and anti-biotic and anti-fungal and will do its job at gently killing whatever infection may be causing the problem. 3) Vics Vapourub - if you rub a little of that on the soles of your feet till it feels warm and then put on warm socks for the night you may find it will cut the amount of mucus you produce. 4) gargle a glass of salt water 3-5 times a day for a few days. It doesn't have to be too strong - 1/2 teaspoon of salt per large glass of warm water would do. (It just needs to be salty enough for you to taste the salt.) This also deals with any throat/ glandular infection problems. Basically if you try all these you can see what works for you and what doesn't. Please consider what pré existing conditions you have and what might be incompatible with your health. For eg don't overdose on salt gargle if you suffer from high blood pressure etc. Hope this helps.

Do you have a consultant Jessie. I would speak to them as to whether a nebuiser would be beneficial for you. If they think it would be then ask if they can loan you one from the hospital. The benefit of this is they will maintain your nebuliser annually or will exchange it. You will also be given tubing, masks or mouthpiece, cups etc annually.

Your GP is incorrect in that the nebulisers you buy don't usually come with saline and he would have to agree to prescribe it for you before you pay out any money.

You might want to ask GP about prescribing you with a flutter (a device which looks like a pipe, which helps you to get the mucus out), just loosening it is not enough.

Good luck.
