Hi everyone. I'm super freaked out. Ive just been diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, and I have to take steroids for a year. I'm terrified of getting fat. I've been overweight a few times in my life, and I can't function. I was wondering if anybody knew of any ways to stay thin on this stuff...
thanks!!

Oh I understand about the worry of weight gain. I have also been overweight during a part of my life. It was draining. When I was put on steroids I voiced my concern to the doctor. He said the steroids increase your appetite. Eat healthy and keep moving. He also ventured to remind me that having a rounder face is the least of my worries and that if the steroids can help that is the most important thing. So, I have been on them for a few months now. My face is definitely fuller and I have gained about four pounds but I believe that is from being in hospital for two weeks without my usual excercise. I am back to walking now so expect to lose it slowly.
I am sorry about your diagnosis. Hang in there and do let us know how things go for you.
I had it many years ago and it was cured with Feldene and gold injections. When a blood test was taken after a couple of years, there was barely a trace of it left.
Don't know, the doctor prescribed, or rather a consultant did. I used to go for regular check ups at the hospital. Later I got osteoarthritis. Not much fun as I am allergic to anti imflammatories.
I too used to be really heavy. I even had "allergic to Prednisone" added to my medical chart. (Because of the weight gain) I finally lost the last 4 pounds I'd gained on Pred a few years ago doing the Whole Foods Plant Based No Oil program. So when they said PREDNISONE I wasn't as concerned as in the past. Also considering the amount of Pain - it was a no brainer. I may have gained a couple of pounds and watched it religiously. Scary though as I was content at 92 (only 4'10") & when I dropped the Pred to around 8 mg a day I am fighting to stay at 88. On 4 now.
