Welcome to the group. You may find this handy. patient.co.uk/health/spirom...
I am 56 and was told at 36 I had copd, namely asthma and Emphysema. You need to talk with your g.p regarding copd, he can refer you to a specialist for tests and depending on results, they will see what treatment you need if any! When I was first diagnosed I was a little bit breathless and prescribed an inhaler.
Exercise is excellent as it strengthens the lungs..Talk with your g.p and ask for leaflets on copd..Hope this helps Regards Laura x
But Laura remember The uk takes care of its ppl...here in the usa if i lose my job i lose my benefits and it falls like a stack of beans...this is jimmyr and im just so afraid....any room over there for one more ginger

Has the GP done a Spiromitry test? and at least explained what was found and a course of action? It is very much a case of a term to group a number of conditions together. The obstructive side of it means that you may not be expelling all of your air when needed. Stress is not it's friend and learning to control your breathing is a must! If you smoke? STOP NOW!
I have had lung problems most of my life I am 59 now.
Be Well
Hi I bet your worried out of your head, go back to your doctor, and ask him to explain to you what c.o.p.d is then you need to know what sage you are at, and what are they going to do help you cope with this, be firm but polite, what meds your going to have, are you going to be seen by the hospital, I think that will do for now, if your doctor does not have the answers then get a referral to hospital who have the right doctors there and there's loads they can do, life hasn't ended ok this is a new chapter in your life a bit different but it's ok your get use to it, and if we on here can help we will your not a lone x
Good Morning Taxi1974 - How scary is that diagnosis? My husband was diagnosed about 12 years ago and we were really scared by it. And as you we left the surgery inhalers in hand and that was that. Over the years I have learned to be more proactive but it has taken time! I think because this is a long term condition it is very different to one that can be immediately cured by a tablet and some doctors just seem to let you get on with it!
There is good news - there is every chance you will live a happy long life even with COPD! Though it might be a bit slower than others. My husband is still working full time and we have a great quality of life. Below are listed my top tips which I hope you will find of help:-
1. Contact BLF - they have some very useful literature and will be able to advise what questions to ask your doctor.
2. Make sure you get a flu jab - colds, flu etc. can result very quickly in chest infections which can make you very ill
3. Get a pneumonia jab
4. If you are feeling more breathless go back to the doctor - there are lots of different medications available
5. KEEP AS FIT AS YOU CAN - there is a fantastic course - pulmonary rehabilitation which is a course of monitored exercise and information but you need to ask your doctor for a referral (when we first asked we were told my husband was too well to go on it - but perserve!)
6. If you think you are getting a chest infection - you are more breathless, you are coughing more and/or you are coughing up more sputum or it changes colour. Dont hang around get to the Doctor and use antibiotics before a chest infection takes hold.
7. Listen to your body and learn what makes your symptoms worse.
8. DO NOT GOOGLE - it will terrify you!
If you have any questions just post on here - everyone is very friendly and have lots of useful information. Take good care, look after yourself and enjoy your life. TAD xx
Hello Taxi, look at the positives!.you are relatively young and have been diagnosed early. If you smoke you must stop now or it will kill you.Keep fit and eat healthy food and you could live to be a hundred.Good luck!D.
