Newly diagnosed with mild COPD. Can anyone tell me how fast this disease progresses? Thanks.

If you don't smoke, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly the chances are you will die of something else entirely!

Hi Deb, and welcome. I'm new to the group and find it really helpful. You'll probably get lots of advice from the lovely people on here who have much better knowledge than me but, as I understand it, there's a lot you can do to slow down the progress or even stop the condition from getting any worse. The most important thing is that if you smoke, stop. Get plenty exercise (walking about half an hour each day is good) eat a healthy diet and avoid anything that may irritate your lungs (dust, smoke, harsh cleaning products etc). A lot depends on your general health and other factors but people do live for many years with COPD, so please don't worry! Take care and best wishes to you. Stay positive.

Hi Pam and thanks for your reply. The most annoying thing about this is that I'm only 50 years old and quit smoking 13 years ago. I work full time and already lead a very healthy and active lifestyle. There's not much I can change. Seems very unfair πŸ˜₯πŸ˜₯x

Hi Deb. It is annoying, I was 57 when I was diagnosed and like you work full time and have always been very active. On the positive side, it is mild and you do seem to be doing everything right, so just keep doing what you're doing. One of the the biggest hurdles is accepting it, just try not to let it rule your life and your thoughts. You'll get there and good luck with it. 😊😊😊 XXX

Mrs mummy is right take advice of what she has just said

Hello.... I also have mild COPD. I increased my activity level and joined a gym also started a really healthy diet with daily supplements. I feel better now then I have for years. Drinking lots of water is good for your lungs as well. I'm thinking I'll be around ( and healthy ) for many years. We really need to be mindful of our health and take care everyday. Also work on good sleeping habits. Im new to this site and Its brought me so much comfort...

I was diagnosed in 2007but I'm still here. Change your lifestyle, get plenty of exercise and eat healthy. And above all stop smoking . I feel so much better since I took all of this advice, and don't get any really bad infections any more. I also recover much better. So please don't worry 😊 you know your own bady lists. To it

Hi and welcome to the group. Mrsmummy gave the perfect reply. Also remember not to let your COPD rule your life. Many people with mild COPD don't have to change much. Just try and stay positive and hopefully you won't have to change much. Take care xxxx

Hi, The answer is up to you, really.

i was diagnosed in 1989, when I was 54. I had my 80th Birthday last December.

You need to take care of your health. Take your inhalers as and when advised. Eat properly and above all else keep mobile. Don't become a couch potato. keep active.

I worked full time, until I was 68 and then did a couple of afternoons each week in a charity shop. Now I'm my wife's carer.

Keep busy and take good care of yourself and there's every reason why you should, maybe, make 90. Good Luck.

Hi, Thank you or your kind words.

I should have mentioned Pulmonary Rehab. Ask your g.P. to refer you to your local Respiratory Group. Usually at your local hospital.

Rehab takes the form of 2hrs twice weekly for 6 weeks. The 2 hours are split into an hour very light exercise. (Tailored to your specific ability), the second hour consists of talks/lectures appropriate to general needs of those in attendance.

Time definitely well spent.

They may even lay on transport if necessary.

Take Care,

Cheers.
