Weight gain and Emphysema

Just wondering if anyone else with Emphysema/ Copd has experienced weight gain. I know I can't do as much as I used to but I don't eat a lot and I don't eat sweet things like chocolate. Every health professional I have come into contact with always comments " I bet you have lost weight" when I say it's the opposite they look at me like I'm nuts.

Ditto mr M. I don't eat all day then I love a biggish dinner and the odd goodie I shouldn't, so yes fluke I too have gained weight, easy to put on harder to get off. Xx Sonia xx

Ps : if anyone knows any overnight weight loss solutions plz reply, if not possible , forget it 😂😂😂😂

Hi Sonia that could well be why you are putting on weight! If you don't eat all day, then your body thinks it is starving and holds on to the calories. It then lowers your metablism which ends up in a vicious circle, where you eat less but still can't lose weight.

The way to go is to eat at least 3 times a day and try to spread your food out over at least over 12 hours and hopefully longer. You need to have a breakfast (needn't be a big one - say a banana, or toast and fried egg etc.). This kickstarts your metablism in the morning and will help you burn calories. You also need lunch as well.

Haven't you heard the saying 'Breakfast like a King, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper'? Ok I am not saying follow that coz I know how hard it can be.

Remember - dogs eat once a day, cats twice and humans 3 times.

I remember an ex colleague not eating all day and ending up with a stomach ulcer. She was told her stomach acid because it had nothing else to work on started attacking her stomach instead. x

Hi bev, I find eating in the day difficult. I think as an ex smoker my days consisted of tea and fags all day, food at teatime, and as i worked nights i always ate at 2-3 in the morning, but I do need to change my habits, I seriously need to lose a couple of stone, just wish it was as enjoyable losing it as it is putting it on ( I love food ) 😂😂😂 sick of buying bigger clothes 😂😂 but thanks for the tip will defo give it a go xx Sonia xx

bet you know what I mean we been to some people and they put the serving dishes out then sit down and im sitting there thinking they must have forgotten some perhaps they left them on the side in the kitchen ,or worse they left something in the oven then they say dig in help your self and your frighten to take anything you look in the dish of roast potatoes and count how many people there are and how many potatoes so you can work out how many it would be polite to take ,

You are so funny!

Never had that problem - I have not been to dinner in a private house for many years M - it was always others coming to my place. Now I can have as much or as little as I want here!

Oh I lie - I went to a Carvery pub a few months ago with some friends down from Scotland- and you can have as many vegetables as you can carry, if you want, and they are always delicious...especially the roast potatoes...they are nearly as good as mine used to be, except they are not cooked in Dripping.

when I gave up smoking i put 2 stone on and its very hard to lose it and keep it off, I have emphysema and take spiriva, clinil modulite and ventolin, my nurse says that none of my inhalers would cause me to gain weight. I eat small meals but do eat too much chocolate, no will power.

What kind of chocolate is your favourite Riverbank? I love Galaxy myself :)

Me too.

Yes, I did and had to seriously diet to lose weight. I think people with more Bronchitis symptoms tend to put on weight but I also have other health conditions which may have been responsible for the weight gain. I did a 1200 hundred calories a day, low fat & sugar diet. I still have to control what I eat; once I get to about 1500 calories a day, which is well below what a tall woman should be able to eat, I put on weight fast. Love Margaret x

Interesting. After I got out of the hospital on 6/2/15 for my second copd exacerbation I weighed 177lbs and my height is 6 ft.

I was put on oxygen and started walking every day with oxygen. I started eating pineapple and four pieces of toast every morning. I started eating chocolate candy also due to kicking the smoking habit.

in one month i went from 177 to 195 ! Before COPD there is no way I would have gained 20 lbs in 30 days.

Im getting to know my new metabolism. Because I can't keep up with my old daily routine Im not burning the calories I used to. I was told I should loose wait due to having to "purse" breath all the time.

Its not making me loose weight at all. So I have to really watch what I eat and make sure what I eat is real food that my body can easily use and not turn to fat ( like chocolate , bread). I exercise as much as my lungs will allow me to.

hope this helps fluke13

This is exactly what has happened to me. I went from 12.02 in November to 14.07 now. Stomach scan Tuesday. I am inactive but can't work this out!

Yes I was just told I have emphysema after a car accident February 26,2017 and I gain ten lbs, I'm a vegan and calorie counter and I don't cheat on my diet, no sweets I excersize 7 days a week and still can't lose weight,I was 110 lbs for 15 years now I'm between 120 and 125, it sucks, but doctors say it's part of emphysema disease, plus I stop smoking and cigarettes is a suppressant.

Hey there Fluke13,

I see from the date of your post that it was 2 years ago.

I’m just wondering, if you’re still on here, how you managed with your weight gain?

It seems similar to my weight gain, quite the opposite of the norm.

Mine seems (to me) an unusual amount, I’ve never in my life been over 12 stone but 12 months after being diagnosed with COPD, bang! I’m 18 stone. I walk 20miles a week and I don’t think over eat.

Best wishes

Simon
