Hi I have just read it and while I can't verify it, we have all heard of the cutbacks and austerity measures so I am would be surprised if malnutrition wasn't increasing. I have heard about the high rates of TB especially in London several times amongt the homeless and destitute so I presume there is some basis to it. x

Usual scaremongering, we have more rickets because kids are so covered in cream to avoid skin cancer so don't get vitamin from sun, food banks are used by fewer people than stats show as each visit is counted as a person but same person can make multiple visits, people collecting food and selling for cigarettes and drugs. Yes there have been cuts and some people have been affected but a lot of people have gone into work. Money should go to genuine hardship cases.

I think it is the parents fault. A lot of children aren't given thing. Like fruit and veg. My daughter workers in McDonald's and when they are not at school some of the teenagers are in three 3 or 4 times a day. There is a cafe in Edinburgh called the social bite the owner employs homeless people. And on Christmas Day they were giving homeless people a Christmas meal donated by the general public.

Snodgrass,

I agree, the media does quite a bit of 'scare-mongering' and if more people don't wise up to their game it'll be the ruination of us all; I think one way we can keep a check on the 'tabloids' is to do an occasional 'off topic' convo like this to try to sort out what's really going on.

In the original article I sent along, it sounds a lot like all of England is besieged by Victorian illnesses re-blossoming throughout the culture.

I'm anxious to hear from more folks in the group.....

Duncan

Same people milk the system and can be referred by multiple agencies as there is no central systematic!

It's not all scaremongering by any means. I volunteer in the Community and am an officer of our local Neighbourhood Association.

The depravation for many poor familys is truly heartbreaking, and many of these familys are workers and always have been.

Of course you get the ones who play the system, you always will whatever the situation, but believe it or not they amount to about 1% of the population.

I agree the Victorian illnesses aren't as prevelant as the Australian article suggests, but ricketts is on the rise I believe.

Sorry if you feel I'm ranting, but it is a subject close to my heart.

Should have replied earlier but took a detour via hospital! I too volunteer and have done for 20 years and of course the deprivation for some is awful which is why I rant on too about poor families whose kids all have x boxe, iPhones, iPads, huge TVs. My grandchildren aren't allowed all those, though they could be afforded. Only 1% of the population is a vast number of scroungers! Take the money from them to give to the undemanding needy who rarely complain but still suffer.
