Exercise Bike versus Treadmill

I have copd, and use my exercise bike in the evening when the soaps are on...heh heh. However - Neither me nor my dog can walk at great speed/distances any more ( he has arthritis) and I was wondering if there were any advantages in using a treadmill (for me obviously ) .

Thankyou.

I prefer using the exercise bike and rowing machine as the weight of my body is taken by the seat, so I don't put so much stress on my hips and knees.

Thankyou eregendal. I must admit, when I went for pulmonary rehab. I did enjoy the rowing machine, but was never on it for long as we had to keep moving on to other equipment.

I prefer the exercise bike, using a treadmill I tend to drag my right leg after a few steps. With the bike, as eregendal says, bike takes the the weight and stress off the limbs. My pedometer reads about 350 steps for every Kilometre I do. Im doing at least 4k per day now.

Thankyou Jjude, Your results look good to me. Every little helps doesn't it.

It is nice to know what others think and how they cope.

Can't help you I'm afraid but a thought for your dog. Don't know how old he is, but have you considered Acupuncture for him? One of my cats, who is seventeen, had a Stoke at the beginning of the year & virtually lost her mobility - she was already on medication for Spondylitis, but we really thought that she would have to be put to sleep. As she had had Acupuncture previously we decided to try it again. The result speaks for itself - she can now go upstairs & jump on the bed or jump up onto the settee. She only has a session once a month now & is doing really well. She is completely relaxed while the needles are in & sometimes even goes to sleep. Hope this helps.

How wonderful Helen 08. I am so pleased for her - and you. Sadly I do not believe this would help Merlin. I took him at 11months old from the breeders with an already well developed awful skin condition, black and thick and smelly, like elephant hide. Poor thing had nearly scratched himself to death. He is a yellow Labrador. After nine years he still has deeply ingrained wrinkles on his face where he had been chewing underneath his body to relieve the itching. To cut a long story he is now on the smallest dose of steroids that can be given, to keep everything under control, together with Tramadol and Glucosamine. I was warned that the treatment he has had would not help to lengthen his life but would give him quality - and that is what he has. So - I think he has gone through enough. He has a good strong heartbeat and loves to socialise.

Lets hope your second visit is a bit better sally, don't give up too soon. I did the six minute walk at the assessment and our very last session. Shame there was no equipment but quite a few exercises can be done with nothing but determination. Let me know how it all goes.

I didn't bother with a gym afterwards. I do an exercise regime I mostly took from a video thats on youtube and HU. takes me about 15 mins to do that and so many arm crunches with weights, then I do the 4k bike, another 10 mins or so, then I try making sure I walk further each time I move or go anywhere. Have to say (and brag) that I set myself a goal of 5000 steps recently and today... I have achieved that for the first time. I feel great and have been asked to start a residents group for our sheltered area. And I think I just may.
