It didn't work for me as I have COPD and am a CO2 retainer. Buteyko teaches breath control and mentions retaining co2 as something to aim for? Plus once I had made on-line enquiries I was constantly badgered to pay for various courses. I did buy the paperback for about £8 whereas the courses were over £300. You can get the book 'Close your mouth and breath' at Amazon.

How long did you try it for......if u don't me asking??
Hi
Well I tried the exercises that were supposed to help COPD sufferers. Must have been a coupe of months but then I was hospitalized with a terrible chest infection. 1st time I had to call an ambulance or been in the hospital in 10 years with this disease.. Was there twice in the space of a month then was discharged on oxygen & discovered that I was a CO2 retainer. I am in no way blaming the Buteyko method but I am a little more wary now.
Take care

'SUMMARY
Buteyko reminds me in many ways of D.D. Palmer. Starting from an erroneous observation, using flawed logic, lacking prior plausibility, forsaking scientific validation, and promoting their techniques as virtual panaceas, they each nevertheless may have found small medical niches where their techniques may have some limited utility. Palmer’s niche appears to be treatment of low-back pain, and for Buteyko, it may be the symptomatic relief of mild asthma symptoms.
If however, you are looking for the Buteyko Breathing Technique to cure your asthma, I wouldn’t hold my breath.'
I did a course many years ago, but I suffer from recurrent infections so it makes practicing difficult.
My asthma certainly did improve, I started again this year but it needs determination and time. I have no infection at the moment so fingers crossed I can get my Control Pause up.
As has been said the method is not for everyone, as the CO2 is pushed right up...no good for people with heart problems, transplants, or retainers.
But the gentle belly breathing through the nose with a relaxed diaphragm does help prevent hyperventilation .
The courses are expensive, much more now than when I did it, but I have offered one to my eldest daughter as she is having problems with her reliever inhaler.
I also have problems with my reliever, so maybe it is genetic....and Buteyko did help me in the past. I have a book, cd, and an old cassette tape which I use. You can also see it on You tube. The problem is it looks quite simple to do, but if you get the method wrong you can make yourself worse....hyperventilate even more.
You need to research carefully to find a good teacher as it is a huge investment
My new book arrived today...so here goes....I'll let you know what happens
Hi again, I think kiwi chick has been practicing Buteyko too
Thanx for your reply. Good luck with it. I'm trying to do some and it does seem to help. Although I'm just doing YouTube Exercises it does seem to be helping. if they did a money back guarantee like Allen Carrs hypnotherapy does for quitting smoking then I'd be the first in the queue.
It seems to be helpful for some Asthmatics I am told, but it has done nothing for my emphysema and COPD. There is a local therapist peddling the technique and claiming it cured him of COPD and my respiratory nurse and I agree we wouldn't pay him in pea nuts!! So beware.
Thanx hallentine. I have emphysema I'm doing the breathing exercises haven't taken the blue inhaler for three days where as before I'd take it up to six times a day!!! I do think that the controlled breathing is helping me but we are all different. Dunno if I would part
With any cash tho. 😎😄😄
