Please be careful and check you have a vit d deficiency - too much vitamin d can be harmful xx

in reply to

Yep I made mistake. ..don't know to do with now.

I read the article it really says "Vitamin D can prevent exacerbations by up to 40% in persons with a Vitamin D deficiency" So unless you have a Vitamin D deficiency the effect may be negligible or worse as suggested by TADAW above.

'. . . researchers did find vitamin D supplementation modestly reduced the severity and duration of flare-up symptoms in all patients in the vitamin D group, regardless of their baseline vitamin D levels, compared to the placebo group.'

To recommend taking only enough vitamin D to prevent outright deficiency, is like recommending limiting the oil in an engine to just enough to stop it seizing up . . . medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

Looks like the pictured tabs are 200 IU of vit D each: megawecare.com/products/com... and at 600 mg per cap it's the calcium content that has a greatest overdose potential here.

I've taken a 5,000 vit D supplement, + whatever's in my diet, every day for years. My 25OHD (serum vit D) level is 150 nmol/L (60 ng/ml). Admittedly I don't get out in the sun much these days, but on the other hand how much D you need goes up in line with body weight, and I only weigh 50 kg (110 lbs): webmd.com/osteoporosis/feat...

I am not allowed sunshine for the next two years due to cancer treatments. However, my GP tested me because of this and because I have been on steroids for almost 20 years. He then prescribed the pills for me, which means I get them for free but they also contain Calcium as your body cannot absorb vitamin D without also absorbing calcium. A lot of vitamins are linked like that. Your body cannot absorb Vit C without Iron at the same time, which is destroyed by caffeine half an hour either side of it. They don't tell you that on the "Added Iron" cereal packets....but they do show you. Have you ever seen a cereal advert with a cup of tea or coffee on the table? No, it's always fruit juice....

Some of your information is incorrect:

Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption, but calcium does not affect vitamin D absorption: nof.org/calcium

Vitamin C enhances iron absorption but iron does not affect vitamin C absorption: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/694...

But you're right about caffeine inhibiting iron absorption: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/640...

Caffeine also inhibits the absorption of various other vitamins and minerals: fitday.com/fitness-articles...

I normally drink 2 or 3 cups of tea a day... and may be 1 cup of coffee. Is that to much.

No, that's fine - assuming your diet is good enough for you to afford a marginal loss of nutrients without compromising your health.

Ok ..enhances...but that means that a lot of your vitamins go to waste and you have no way of measuring that. What is the point of following a balance diet if you unbalance it by say, drinking coffee....? The nutrient specialists always leave that word out of most consultations because the vitamins they prescribe are mixed in the right proportion....Hence my Vitamin D tablets also contain Calcium but don't just contain it, they contain it in the right ratio. The instructions that come with prescribed vitamins contain instructions of how and when the vitamins should be taken. You do not get the mixes of vit C and Iron or vit D and Calcium from any other source and you certainly don't get the guidelines. If you need vitamin supplements, your GP will run a simple test for you and then prescribe the correct dose if you need them. Just going and buying pills to pop not only wastes money but can also have a serious effect on your health and when most of us on this group are already struggling with one condition or another, we certainly don't want to have to cope with self inflicted conditions. So, yes, I agree, the word "enhances" is required but it is generally taken as understood.

I have never taken vitamin supplements in my life as love food and cook nearly all the food that I eat.

And it me that cooks for my family.

I will find someone to give the vitamin D pills.

I'm with you on that. I have always believed in a balanced diet and it was a lot easier to achieve when the kids left home. I have to take my Vit D and calcium due to lack of sunlight. Even with the winter sun, we all grab vit D but I have to be completely covered. One year down and two to go and then some sun.

I don't take nutritional supplements at random, I do in-depth research, and if I was afflicted with a metabolic disorder or organ failure of some kind I'd consult my GP about it too - and about my diet in general. Otherwise I'd no more ask my GP whether I should take a particular supplement than about what I should have for dinner.

I've taken a number of vitamins in doses far above their RDA for years. My health is good apart from COPD, and despite an FEV1 of 25% have yet to need oral steroids, antibiotics, or oxygen. I last had the flu about 8 years ago, and though I can get short of breath more easily some days than others, I've never had an exacerbation.

But each to their own . . .

in reply tostilltruckin

Each to our own.

How very true.

Sorry to hear you need cancer treatments, Brian. I would hate to miss out on sitting in the sun, for whatever reason but that is a harsh one. Good wishes to you. xx
