I am curious to know how many people with Emphysema also had a Vitamin D deficiency? And high cholesterol?

Vitamin D deficiency and Emphysema?
Yes, I take Invicta D3 for it and Amlodopine for cholesterol , do you think there's link ?
Yes im starting to think so. That is why i am asking. My Vitamin D levels were down to 10 (instead of the healthy range of 50-70). And i have read that Vitamin D3 is for healthy lung function.. and also Vit D is linked to Cholesterol. (And my Cholesterol is very high)..
I was told that taking cholesterol lowering meds affects the absorption of Vit D3, so i havent been put on any.. Was told to take 3 Vitamin D3 tabs/day to get my levels back up.
Thank you for answering! xx
Hi, thanks, I didn't know that taking cholesterol lowering meds affects the absorption of Vit D3, maybe I should ask Doc or nurse when I next see them.
Are you sure your taking Amlodipine for Cholesterol? I take that for lowering blood pressure and Atorvastin for lowering Cholesterol?
I have vitamin D deficiency but not high cholesterol.🤗xx
Do you take Vit D3 supplements? and thank you for replying!
Hi Laura, I had my vitimin d3 level tested came back low, dont no how low ,go put me on 25ooo twice aweek for six weeks ,I have bought some d3 of 1000 per day to make sure I'm topped up ,I also have high cholesterol, I dont take anything for that as tabs dont suit me simavastin particular, I think my last cholesterol test said 7 .2
Thank you Alice.. Quite interesting.. and you have emphysema also? Since taking the Vit D3 has it helped stop infections and colds? Yes My cholesterol was up to 10... but that is also because i am slender and stupidly thought only larger people had to worry about cholesterol.. Wasnt too happy when i was told to not only give up smoking but cheese, and hot chips and all! I never knew about Bad fats until this. Thank you for your reply! xx
I dont no jet Laguna as I only finished the six week corse two weeks ago
I take a vitamin D3 supplement because living in north of Britain there's a lack of sunshine. I have mild emphysema. My cholesterol was checked a few weeks ago and is good but I eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly, normal weight . I like to take positive steps to look after my health especially in my old age
Thank you Lemon7 for your reply! Iv worked night shift for many years, so my Vit D was severely low.. I have very quickly learnt about bad fats now, and have drastically changed my eating habits.. which werent so good as i thought being a slender person and doing very physical labour i could eat what i liked.. not so!
I think that the medical profession is only recently becoming aware of the importance of vit d etc. Healthy eating and exercise regularly and taking care of yourself makes you feel proactive too. Take care of yourself. All good wishes to you.
Thank you, and all the best to you also! xx
I think it depends on what country you are in and what test you are taking. Im in Australia.. My Dr said the healthy range is between 50-70 and i was a very low 10.
Ahhhh you saw my other post! I was waiting for someone to give feedback on that! ha ha Thank you! I shall go check it out, might be the scare i need! Cheers!
Wow interesting how different the info is.. Because in Australia they say a level of 50 is passable in winter but 70 is preferred healthy level..
Hi, I have both, high cholesterol and osteoporosis, so I take vit d tablet every day.
Big question...why do we all have Vitamin d-3 deficiencies? Rather strange. I am in sun, I have a thing for cheese, too. I always end up low and get a prescription for Vitamin d-3.....
Meg
I never knew wearing sunscreen blocked out the absorption of Vit D... But i also have done night shift for over a decade. But i do know Vit D3 helps improve respiration, fight infection, and with muscles etc.. I got slack taking mine, and ended up with body aches all over and exhaustion, and started getting sickly.. jumped straight back on them, and am feeling a lot better.
I feel better, also. When, I am taking them. I slack off at times. What I wonder is there a collation between Vitamin D causing or helping emphysema to develope? Other, vitamins and minerals are instrumental in causing many other diseases.
Take care,
Meg 🌻
Hi Megshafer,
That was something i was quite interested in.. like the chicken and the egg... Which came first.. the Vit D deficiency... causing lung issues... Or Lung issues causing Low Vit D??? I have no idea on that one though.. I was supposed to go back and get my blood tested to see where my Vit D levels are now.. (end of May).. But somehow misplaced the request form! oops...
I do that, too. Always, misplace only orders for blood draws, I think it's a subconscious thing...lol. so, I usually show up when I remember, they let me get by doing this, so far!!

Im so glad im not the only one Meg! Before all this, i hadnt gone to the Dr in over 10years. Im really not a huge fan of Doctors, or hospitals etc.. So i do think it is a subconscious thing, i dont want to have to go back for the results.. In my defense.. She did kind of threaten me with wanting to do a colonoscopy (my Mother got Bowel cancer at 48yo).. So im avoiding her! ha ha
Hi! We had company, and they stayed for dinner! I am in the U.S., don't know if you can do this, but I use the box, yep...You use the bathroom in a lined box, then they test it. So, far so good. If something is strange then I will have to do the colonoscopy. Better to be safe though. So, just a thought. I have a friend who gets a colonoscopy every six months!! She had a polyp, years ago. It was benign. She doesn't mind them at all.
Take good care, stay well!! Hope to chat with you soon.

I don't have low Vit D as I'm out and about summer and winter and make sure I've have half an hour's exposure to the sun before I put the sun cream on (not that I've had to do that more than twice this year so far). My cholesterol is slightly raised but not enough to be put on the dreaded statins yet.
I’m out and about a lot too but the sun rarely breaks through the clouds. My usual outdoor attire even in July and August is 3 tops, 3 coats, 3 pairs of trousers and a hat. This place apparently has the highest instance of MS in the world. I’ve heard this several times and the first few times I assumed I must have misheard or misunderstood. But, with lots of research starting to be done, it’s being put down to the absence of sunshine.
My vitamin d levels are apparently optimal but I still take supplements as I want them to stay that way. My cholesterol levels are also fine but I don't eat meat. However I do eat a lot of dairy products which help me maintain a high protein diet which I have been Iinformed is important if you have COPD.
I dont eat meat either.. But still had high cholesterol... i blame cheese! (and perhaps genetics?)
I am surprised that my cholesterol remains fine despite my regular cheese bingeing. Perhaps it is all about the genes 🤔
ok... i also like hot chips.. But Yes.. i think genes must play a big part in it.. my mother had atherosclerosis, and My Nan and Great Grandma used to joke about having BIG hearts.. (enlarged hearts).. so perhaps that plays a part in it all?
Hi Launa22, I have emphysema (and high cholesterol but can't take statins as they started to destroy my leg muscles). My respiratory nurse pointed out the importance of maintaining good Vit D levels as it helps with asthma and lung conditions. I had a deficiency in Vit D so now take a supplement.
I am Vit D deficient too. I also have to take cholesterol tablets but more of a precaution as I have multi heart and lung conditions. I also need Iron as my IPAH treatment affects that? I had an ongoing discussion with my GP after taking the Vit D my level was at the low end of normal but as soon as they took me off them it went down again! Even in the Summer? I am now on it permanently.
I had low vitamin D and went out to buy some tablets but our pharmacist at work said I had to see GP. All sorted now and good levels. Cholesterol is not high though.
My GP gave me a prescription.. but when i went to get it filled, they just grabbed them off the shelf in the chemist. They sell them in the supermarket, so i just get them cheaper there!
The dose I was prescribed cannot be bought over the counter, as it is too high. Please see NICE guidelines.
Thank you everyone! Seems to me, Vit D deficiency is quite common among us. I wonder if it came before the lung issues.. or after? hmmmm Either way.. Looks like keeping up with the Vit D3 is very important!
