HI, not posted for a while, to be honest I am not in a good place. I just cannot seem to eat, I have absolutely no interest in food, if I don't force myself to eat something in the morning, most days I just cannot be bothered. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Kad, yep me sitting here forcing a bowl of cereal down. Hard going. Same every mealtime. Suzyxxx

Is a sign of the condition advancing Suzy, or just another manifestation of my depression?

Suzy6 profile image
Suzy6 in reply toKad21

Not sure Kad. Depression makes me lose my appetite. If I'm feeling happy and confident I do eat better but not as much as I should.

I'm on Aymes milkshakes two a day and managing to keep my weight, even add a little. Not my lifetime 8 stone but at moment on the up to 7stone 8lbs. An achievement for me.

Try to eat little and often. I can manage better that way.

Good luck. Suzyxxx

Hi Kad😊

I have trouble with my appetite also. I did notice when I took vitamin D a couple days in a row, I would be hungrier. I have a vit. D defiencey. Yrs ago when I had an ulcer, my dr. told me to eat baby food. I thought he was kidding! Guess what, if you don't feel like eating, you can always get a jar of baby food down... I think if your low in B-12 or the other B vitamins you will lose your appetite.

RUBYXX 😊 😊

I have zero appetite. Ever. I find myself pushing small amounts of food around the plate.

Came on after three chest infections in a row, one which I'm convinced was pneumonia.

Before this I was eating everything I could get my hands on and doing a fair amount of excercise.

They're starting to pick up on the dramatic weight loss at work now.

My husband appetite is brilliant ............when he is on the steroids! Otherwise he can all day without food. Could I suggest that you go to the doctor and ask for meal supplements - my mother in law was prescribed them, just like little juice cartons but at least that way you know you are getting nutrients etc. and it takes some of the added stress away.

My mother suffers with depression and when she is going through a particularly bad time weight just falls off her - she just cant eat so my gut feeling is the depression is brought on by the condition and that in turn causes the appetite loss.

Dont give up though - keep trying and keep eating! Lots of luck and love xxx

I'm the same not eaten proper meal for a couple of years,I was fobbed off with mouth infect ion...NO...it is a problem with Emphsema and sleep ,depression .i buy all the food I like from waitrose and it ends up in the bin. I cook it and sit and look at it,I just cannot eat it, I don't know how I'm still ok. I have now taken some steroids to try to give me an appetite even that is not working, this country is so far behind in health with the cuts to everything ,I thought if I was more relaxed I may eat. But no you can't have anything that makes you feel good!!!! What a load of rubbish ,I've got emphsema do you think I bloody mind getting addicted to Somthing that may make me feel a little bit better to cope with this. Absolute Rubbish now that's abuse!!!!

hello colour23.

So true!

'ealthy eating aint done nought for me. I am losing weight so eat bits of what I fancy. with the complex chronic conditions we have we are beyond food making us better. Actually, in my darkest moments I am thinking of ditching all the pills and going on to cannabis- if I knew how to get some!

all we can do is stick in there. so I wish some relief for you. xx

Get some marujuana (medical) in a brownie and see if it helps. I heard that "wee day" stimulates the appetite.

I've seen what others have written...I don't want carton food I don't want milk I don't do animals. There should be somthing to help us,see what I mean about health!!! Living on carton drinks .i am going to investigate as it is not good enough these Basic facts for good health are being ignored !!! That's what we need, enough research Let's get on with BASIC FACTS!,,

I agree! The thing they need to sort out is the immune system, but the big pill companies are making too much money.

It's called abuse and I'm fed up with it, higher standards are needed, whether you live in a posh or run down area, should make no difference, but unfortunately society is run on low life state...greed and vile politions .

But, we still need to have a desire to eat!!! What will increase that?

Meal supplements should be able to help Kad and if your weight is too low it is possible the doctor can prescribe them. My mother lost her appetite and drank Ensure which is the only one she liked. They are very high in calories and have all the vitamins you need. You can just sip them during the day. The trouble with not eating is that your stomach shrinks which just makes the problem worse.

Other than that the only advice I can give is to ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionalist. x

I lost my appetite on the death of my partner and my diagnosis together. I lost a large amount of weight. It was purely through anxiety and depression. If you think it could be that, your Dr can give you something to help and the sooner you get something for it, the better. I left it a bit late as I was already on antidepressants when I was diagnosed and losing my partner, must have made them just stop working. I got really weak too, and could barely stay out of bed so, I know how disressing it can be. I knew I had to stop waiting for my appetite to come back and try and make it.

I bought a few vitimins like a B complex, a multivitimin and Q10 and I did start feeling much better. I also found I ate more if someone else cooked it. I also started going for walks, even short ones, frequently.

It must be so hard for those that live alone whether they are ill or not, people just can't be bothered to cook or eat alone.

I hope you start feeling better soon. xx

Hi kad21!

I was a chef and loved food but now cannot be bothered, and losing weight, which I can afford at the moment. I make myself eat porridge in the morning.

Just eat little and often of what you fancy and drink lots - not alcohol!

I also have a probiotic drink in the morning- e.g.. yakult

good luck xx.

Little and often keeps me going when I'm having a 'flare-up' of Bronchiectasis, Sjorgrens, Myositis + whatever else fancies giving me kicking when I'm low. I take anti-bi's daily as I don't have a spleen and can lose weight dramatically with chest infections. Best get your doctor to check you out, perhaps he can help build you up.

Do ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietitian - they should be able to give you helpful guidance and may even let you try some of the meal replacement drinks: there's not just Fortijuice and Ensure on the market. All the best, M.

Hi Kad all I can say is thanks so much for your post. I simply cannot put on weight and trying to maintain my pathetically low 7st 5 lbs is a nightmare because half of the time I don't feel like cooking and then I don't feel like eating. I have done the drinks, healthy eating, vit B, vit D, I make high calorie things in my blender, etc etc. Nothing works.I try exercising to build up muscle- I just lose more weight! I recently had two spells in hospital. They put me on cooked breakfasts which I couldn't eat and kept sending lovely nutritionists who talked all about everything I know already. I have been made to feel that it is just me and that somehow I am not doing the right thing to help myself. And then, thanks to this wonderful site I discover that there are lots of us! This country is obsessed with obesity and losing weight. Every time you turn on the television they are banging on about it. Of course, losing weight is easier to tackle than trying to put it on. Isn't it time that one of these pundits put their mind to helping us? Any suggestions of whom to contact anyone?

Dear bloggers. I have exactly the same problems. Even worse when my hubby goes away. I am convinced the problem is largely psychological. We were brought up to eat meals at dining tables, with family and friends around. Eating alone is miserable, it feeds depression and loss of self esteem. XX Val

Hi Kad21, I know exactly how you feel. For the last two years the only thing I really enjoy is a slice of wholemeal toast with butter and marmalade in the morning so I can take my tablets. I`m on my own and can`t be bothered to cook - just thinking about what to make makes me feel sick. I have to do online grocery shopping so often look at the ready meals but they too make me feel ill. I wonder if it`s our inhalers to blame ? Yet some have steroids in and they usually increase the appetite. One things for sure I`m not getting my recommended fruit and veg. And before anyone suggests making wholesome smoothies, been there done that and ended up throwing them away. Guess I`ll have to keep on with my multivitamin tablet. Keep well, Sheila x

It is hard, we all know we must do it and it is easy for the Doctor and nutritionists to print out menus, but actually cooking and swallowing it is another matter entirely. This disease seems to have so many side effects, but no apparent addressing of the reason or how to alleviate it. My mother passed away from COPD 30 years ago and I see no difference in the medication or management of the condition, we should all shout from the rooftops.

Yes, the last thing on my mind is food....and do I ever detest grocery shopping! I am underweight because of the copD and try to eat but.....you know how that goes! I was told,to eat a lot of protein so I do drink Ensure to get the nutrients and I eat ice cream. What's a girl gonna do? I eat better when I am with others and they do the cooking. Lazy!! It is important to eat so you must find your turn-owns. And in my opinion, eat what you like....but I am 75 and really don't worry about insignificant repercussions like CVD! Haha......

Dear all,

I have found that the condition of my mouth also affects taste and most of all smell. Think about it. We smell first, fresh bread, coffee beans roasting, garlic etc and the taste memory follows. They are essential parts of feeling hungry.

If you have a mouthful of thrush and/or a blocked nose you will not get these signals. Nystan Oral Suspension is great for clearing this up. A GP can prescribe it.

Remember Thrush thrives on sugar, so avoid too much. Say No to sweeties until it is cleared up.

The return of smell and taste is fabulous. XXXXX Val
