In a home sleep test, when they work out results, do they know when the persons awake and asleep and take only the sleep time into consideration when working out if someone needs cpap or such like? I believe I may need cpap or something at night, but that unless only the sleep time is accounted, I wouldn't qualify.
Hi Carole, I have sleep apnea and when the test has been done the graph (looks like ecg one) shows all the different stages of sleep, going up and down in peaks and shows when apneas are occurring. I have very disturbed sleep, waking frequently and awake for long periods, however, they could still get a good reading. Are you thinking that if you only actually sleep for a few hours, but, have the mask/monitor on all night that the reading/apneas will show lower than they actually are?
thank you for explaining. Can they set it up to be tested at home?
I bought a recording oximeter, and the Dr saw the printout and said he thinks I have apnoea but didn't send me to be tested, Im thinking of insisting, but wondered if Id get a lower rating for only sleeping part of the night, so that for example, if I slept a total of three hours and had fifty episodes, would they count it as fifty in an 8 hour night rather than three hours? If you see what Im trying to say. Anyway, I will raise it again I think. Thanks for reply
Yes I see what you mean about not sleeping through the night, however, they will still be able to see what's happening. My study was overnight at home. Ask your doctor to refer you to the sleep clinic
I am pleased to see that someone was able to pick up from where I posted. Sorry I didn't get back but I have been too poorly and haven't read or posted all week.
I had the same gadget as Jimmy but at home. The local hospital Medical Physics loaned the gadget. When they feed the watch like thing into the computer it can tell every time you wake, sleep or have Apneas that you don't consciously notice. Apparently I had over 500 Apneas in one night. I certainly only remember waking about 6 or 7 times.
My GP referred me to the hospital to get this test but once they had the results the hospital took over. HTH.
hope your feeling better. I don't think I have apnea. I think I have oxygen dips that wake me. I don't wake gasping for breath nor have nodding off at the drop of a hat, I nap if tired though. Anyway, asked Dr and although she thinks I wont meet criteria, put me through anyway, so am thankful for that. Sounds like they can tell the difference, and I am hoping if it isn't apnea but low oxygen in night that they will diagnose that anyway. Wait and see now, x
i had it done in hospital , i wore a watch like thing, over night connected to a finger grip , i asked the doc the same question,as i didn't sleep too well, he said "don't worry, this gets fed into a computer and tells us all "
