Breathing Comes So Easy Sometimes...And How To Weigh an Owl...

It's an awful shame it doesn't last...this sudden feeling of actually being able to get to the loo without gasping for breath or go into the kitchen and prepare Chicken Kiev without thinking I'm breathing my last...

Actually, I'd quite like to know why butchers leave those nasty horrible bits of sinew poking out of the dead chicken bosoms...and when you turn them over there's bound to be a bloody bit ...Millie and Elis stand right beside my feet, gazing hopefully as I grimace and chop the horrid bits off and toss them to their open mouths...have to make sure each small dog gets the same amount of gunk otherwise they look at me funny...

I thought of something totally gross which we used to love to do as children...pulling the leg sinews from a chicken or a turkey to make the claws retract...

Himself has a trick he used to show to disbelieving townies...putting a chicken to sleep. He'd tuck its head under its wing and then turn it round a few times...put it on the ground and it'd stay like that for ages...then suddenly wake up and rush away squawking.

I learned how to weigh Owls once...it's so easy...you just carefully lay them on their backs on the scales and they'll stay there until you pick them up again...

There used to be a Taxidermist in Norwich in the old part of the city...I'd go and visit him because I really wanted the human skeleton he had in a glass case but because I couldn't think where to put it, I just went to look at it...he had an Eagle Owl which sat at the end of his counter...the owl simply sat there quietly all day...he used to take it home with him every night...it perched on the top of the back seat of his car munching on dead day old chicks...you can buy them frozen in neat packets. I think the same company do mice as well. And small rats.

You have to let them defrost of course...before you feed them to your Owl.

Our friend Luther has a sanctuary for all manner of birds...he has Vultures which he feeds on animals from the local slaughter-house...sometimes his visitors are appalled to see those great birds tugging flesh from a carcase...one woman asked him why he couldn't give them tins of dog food instead...I'd never heard Luther swear before. But he swore in German and then told me afterwards what he'd said in English...it was quite rude actually...so we laughed and he gave me a hug and asked for a rollie...

Wonder if I'll be able to breathe so easily tomorrow...wait and see I suppose.

Hope you have an "easy breathing" day again tomorrow Vashti, thanks for another great tale, I really look forward to your posts - you definitely should write a book! Your mention of being fascinated by the skeleton in the Taxidermist's shop reminded me of going to the Dentist as a child - we had to walk past an Antique shop that had a stuffed crocodile stood on its hind legs outside the front door and my Sister and I used to dare each other to put our hands in its open mouth! 🐊

Wouldn't be terribly happy about dealing with a crocodile...though a stuffed one would be grand!

Hi Vashti, enjoyed this, i always think that what you learn in one situation can be applied to others. Today, i have learned how to keep a chicken still & weigh an owl. To learn, how to cat ch the chicken & an owl, I will put this on my to do list. hope your breathe easy time continues. Love Margaretx

You catch the chicken with a long bit of wire curled into a sort of hook at one end...aim for it's legs with the hook part...pull towards you...one caught chicken! The Owls were rescued which is why they were weighed...to ensure they were putting on weight...so now you know! Thank you Margaret xxx

Oh Vashti, can you imagine giving children today chicken legs to play with? I can remember telling my children this but don't think I ever showed them how to do it! :)

in reply to

I never showed my children either...bit late now I suppose...lol

You cheer me up everyday Vashti. I really look forward to reading your wonderful posts. I'd forgotten the trick with the chicken feet, I remember playing with them as a child. I think I even took one to school one day and even the teachers were fascinated. I can't imagine what they'd say these days!

in reply to Kathygwanny

Probably phone the RSPCA...lol...

I remember the chicken trick. I have a bone to pick with you for having me spend my first half hour of each day reading posts on this site, yours especially. No disrespect to anyone else but you take me on some lovely adventures. Like you .I have noticed an improvement in my breathing in the last 24 hours . Hope it lasts. X Joyce

Wonder what's with the improved breathing...perhaps it's the Spring coming!

I'm glad you like your adventures!

Yes, I remember the chicken legs with the sinews which we pulled to make them move.

Mind you my family are Suffolk so perhaps its a peculiarity of that County.

How we could amuse ourselves so simply in those days!

in reply to emmo

Suffolk is a grand county...even if dead chickens legs became toys for children...lol

We were just reminiscing about those chicken legs recently! Hours of fun we had lol! Vashti it must have felt so amazing to have held an owl like that, I knew a woman who had a pet little owl for years and when it died she had it stuffed....I love Eagle owls they are magnificent birds..

I remember looking after a very sick man in London for a couple of weeks a good few years ago now,and he would swear in German all the time he was not a very nice man! I learnt a little bit of German when I was living in the country as a child and I know what he said was very nasty especially when he was in pain....

I hope you are breathing okay today, hugs huff xxx

Luther is lovely but sometimes his patience is sorely tried...! We had two rescued Tawny Owls...they were too tame to be released so they went to a Sanctuary in the end...

Take a look at my blog. My new 'aspirin management' would need to be built carefully into each individual's situation, but it has greatly reduced the extremes that had developed in my asthma, starting July last year. bit.ly/salamol

It's good you've found something which is of a help to you.

Thanks, it has taken me out of a terrible situation and also I now use no preventer at all so don't need to worry about steroidal side effects. I've used Serevent at a very low rate for occasional relief at night only (only 13 puffs since 08/01; that's 13 times in almost 10 weeks.)
