My brother got the all clear from his lung cancer last November after months of treatment , he became short of breath last week and Saturday I talked him into letting me get him to A & E , the first thought was severe lung infection , later that night he was found to have pneumonia , he was put on antibiotics and fluid and taken to a ward , the next morning we were told he had been moved to the critical care unit , Sunday night they tried to slow his heart rate as it was to fast , his heart stopped and they had to shock him back , he was on a ventilator with face mask , last night his breathing deteriorated and he had to be sedated and a tube inserted to help him breath , I'm so worried now that he may not make it , has anyone out there had any experience of this and survived , I need some hope . Many thanks Angie

Hi Angie,

I'm wondering how long your brother was feeling sick. I actually had a lady dr. Who was out for many mos. Finally, when I went in for an app. She was back. She told me she had pneumonia and had to be incubated. She almost didn't make it.

She said she had to learn to walk all over again. I'm not saying this to scare you.

I'm saying it to let you know she did get better and dont lose hope. I will say a prayer for you and your brother. Please let us know how hes doing. You must be so scared. We're here for you. Don't hesitate to talk to us day or night. Most always somebody around day and night. What kind of lung cancer did your brother have?

Hope to hear some good news soon from you .

I was desperately ill with viral pneumonia in 2013. My heart rate was over 180 and it took the doctors 4 days of trying different drugs to get it back to normal. I also became fevered and had 12 hours of cold towels applied to my head and armpits until my temperature was normal. All in all I had 6 days in Intensive care before I was transferred to a ward. The recovery period was 12 months before I got the all clear but here I am writing to you - I just hope my experience gives you hope and I wish you well in what is a desperate situation.

Good Morning Angie, I cannot offer you any advise but I would like to send you and your brother much love and sending you both every good wish. It must be very scary and worrying for you - at least you persuaded him to go hospital and it sounds as if he is getting the best possible care. Take good care, lots of love TAD xxx

Hi Angie, so sorry to hear your news. I have a female relative, 70yrs. old. In the last month was admitted to critical care with pneumonia. Her husband was told it was highly unlikely that she would ever come home! She was sedated and tube down throat to give oxygen. Later family were old she had had a heart attack. After five days they knew what antibiotics to prescribe. 7 days in critical care then the one slightly less severe, and 2 days later the ordinary ward and 2 days later home. She is still very weak and finding it hard to eat, but she is home. I hoe this gives you one hope for your relative. Hoping and praying for them, best wishes barnowl

Hi Angie, following severe asthma attack and needing to be hospitalised I went on to develop pneumonia followed by septicemia. Taken to the ICU, put in a medically induced coma and was on life support for two weeks. I was 53 and the staff told my family to prepare for the worst. Eventually had a tracheostomy and spent a further 3 weeks on a ward. Couldn't even lift a pen or a cup to start with, let alone walk but that was 7 years ago.

Very much hoping your brother can come through this and am sending a warm hug and a little prayer for you both ~ Lovelight

Hello Angie,

Having been in a similar situation to your brother I can understand how you are feeling.

I had lung cancer 5/6 years ago resulting in a lobectomy (part removal of my right lung). Some time later I entered hospital again with an exacerbation of COPD and a further internment with Pneumonia of which I was sure in my mind that I would not recover. But here I am 5/6 years later typing away on my computer. So I wish both you and your brother the very best of wishes and pray that he has a speedy recovery.

Hi Angie , do hope that your brother makes a speedy recovery & my thoughts are with you at this worrying time . I just wanted to tell you my experience with my husband three years ago .He went into hospital for a biopsy to try & get a diagnosis for the problems he was having with his lungs which had been going on for ten years . After the biopsy every thing went pear shaped & three days later he was in ICU on a ventilator with his surgeon telling me that he was most probably going to die . After five weeks in hospital, most of it in ICU , he eventually came home. His recovery took a long time but very slowly he improved & some months later he was able to do a couple of days at work again ( he is a Health & Safety Trainer ) My point is , please don't give up & be positive when visiting your brother- the surgeon said he felt that the fact that my cousin ( with whom I was staying ) were so positive had helped Mike even though he was on a ventilator . I firmly believe he knew that we were there & willing him on . Everyone on this site will be thinking of you both & hoping for good news soon from you .Take care , Helen .x
