Hey everyone,

Hope your all well.

I was reading some old posts about

checking your lung capacity with a

balloon. Can you do that? Also is blowing

up balloons a good breathing exercise?

Thanks,

Rubyxx

Yep. Balloons are easier for people with nasal cannula than those who use face masks. The hose ends of cannula is balloon size. :-)

Hi Rib,

I'm not talking about oxygen users. I'm talking about blowing up balloons. How are you today?

I know. I was being silly Ruby. Then I dozed off. It certainly can be a good work out for you'd lungs if they are not too bad. I don't believe that it is a good idea to push yourself until you drop though.

There are some good Breathing Exercises on YouTube.

I was 90 in december of 2016 I was told blowing balloons was good for asthmatics when I was in my 40's . except for walking its my only exercise . Dr told me keep doing it .

This conversation is over two years old. Anyway I still believe it is easier to connect the balloon to my oxygen tank.

If you can to it with your lungs then may you continue for many more years. 😁

Good question Ruby I don't know. I guess it is unless you pass out from the exertion first :) x

Kind of like doing the breathing test. It seems it would get rid of the air we dont get out with copd.xx

you can get a "powerbreathe medic" on nhs prescription from GP. Its a lung exercise thing with adjustable levels so it isn't too hard to use. My Dr said she hadn't ever prescribed one before, and chemist hadn't dispensed one so it seems rare for people to know about it. Theres a great youtube vid too, with a physio and three patient helpers doing exercises to follow along with. youtube.com/watch?v=VR7QnSn...

Blowing balloons I would think are a good thing as it is exercising them. With all exercise it is knowing when to stop! As an RLD person what goes in the balloon is all I have, so it is not long before I start to see the room spinning!

If you were looking to blow up hot water bottles then that is a very different kettle of fish. You can cause a lot of damage to the lung with blow-back!

Blowing up a balloon? I can't do it at all and my COPD is mild!

in reply to Azure_Sky

I can do it depending on whether or not the balloon co-operates :O But it is greater fun to get part way, run out of breath and let it go hoping it hits someone you don't like! :) x

Can you blow up a balloon? You can judge your lung function by this. I saw it in an older post. Can't find it now.xx

I found that blowing balloons up was excellent for regulating my breathing and keeping my lungs in order. Only problem was when I burst a few I nearly had a heart attack.
