Is bronchilitis adult, classified as part of the copd or not. Seems my doc says no and says the health service also say no. It's a lung problem, true, usually found in infants but adults can suffer from it. Was confirmed at royal Brompton hosp, London. . It's not bronchitis, that's different . Any one know.?

Copd or not
COPD covers emphysema and chronic bronchitis only. The reason I was given is that while they are different illnesses the treatments are the same. Bronchilitis does not come under the COPD umbrella though I think it does in some countries ie the USA?. But not in the UK. I hope that answers your question. x
Sure is confusing. Thanks for clearing things more.
I think there has been confusion here in the past. I have bronchiectasis and asthma and was told I had COPD. Since it is mild, I dont worry too much, but can understand people wanting to know. xx
Hard still to understand how they decide wether ur in the copd group. It's all lung problem related. Children who continue to have bronchiolitis can be told they have copd so why not adults. ....weird or what. Thank u for your reply good hearing other people's views.
Hi Pamilia, what coughalot says is correct, however many people with varied lung conditions were in the past diagnosed under an umbrella title of COPD. Your DR is correct what you have is not COPD. Hope our answers help but you could always contact the BLF helpline as they deal with question about all lung & chest conditions.
It was the lung people l spoke to when l was first told l had it. They said l could consider claiming for bronchiolitis under the copd group. Once again, very confused.
Sorry to hear that you were misled causing you confusion, on the NHS website they have a definition of COPD which could help you. It is an airways disease just like asthma. I have heard of your illness but am not too familiar with the symptom details ect or how it effects your lungs. But I am sure there are others on the site who maybe can help.
Hi again Pamilia, well I looked up your illness and can understand the confusion now. It is an airways disease in the lungs with lung scaring which are similar symptoms to COPD the only differences I can see are its lower down in the lungs, is of a viral nature rather than bacterial, affects non smokers mainly the young and there are two types one more serious than the other. So I can understand it may be mistaken for COPD or treated as such due to similar symptoms. Thank you for raising your concerns on site I would say it is not COPD but as bad as illness wise. Best wishes
I have both lungs effected plus shadow on one lung, and l am a non smoker. On steriods and immune tablets and have been for a year now. Can't see why it's not, it's serious enough. Still maybe one day it might be. Fingers crossed.
I agree it should be viewed in the same way as it is a very similar illness, will keep my fingers crossed for you .
Mind you, you could also have COPD.
Reading other replies, seems l might have the symptoms but the nhs do not recognise it, unlike USA. Maybe one day.
Pamilia
I have mild bronchiestasis in Australia
The bronchial tubes lose their elasticity and do not squeeze the rubbish back up through the pulmonary system
It then means that bacteria collects n the pool of fluid at the bottom of the lungs at the bronchial tubes
Then the vicious cycle begins of constant infections
Bronchiestasis can develop through four stages to severe
Bronchiestasis is usually caused by repeated infections that scar the lungs and sometimes is not apparent until after childhood
the repeated infections cause both scarring and bronchiestasis
I am on permanent antibiotics and a lung wash really helped
I am considered a COPD patient in Australia
Hope this helps
Simplier to bronchiolitis, but unlike Australia , the UK does not classify it as copd. Thanks anyway . Xx
