CPAP MACHINE: Hi all, I need to know... - Lung Conditions C...
CPAP MACHINE
Surely your respiratory team at the hospital will supply you with one ?
Yes I though that too Jambo. Isn't it free on the NHS?
Certainly is free here in the uk.
If it's not free with NHS then try intermedical.co.uk/homecare
Hi Pnut
The NHS does supply CPAP machines to residents in the UK for free. The machines are given to people with sleep apnoea and the person has to go to the hospital to have the machine fitted. There are different shapes and sizes of mask to fit the machine and the machine can be set at different levels to suit the individual. If you live abroad then I don't think you are eligible but someone else on this site may be better informed than me. Good luck.
Kind Regards
Mandy
As BugsBunny says these machines need qualified setting up. Even with the right type of machine and a correctly fitted mask, the machine needs to be programmed via a cable connected to the Apnea clinic computer. Otherwise the machine will not deliver the correct pressure or at the correct rate. HTH. Regards Rib
If you are in the UK the NHS will supply one. Not really a good idea to do it yourself. Settings have to be correct for you. A helpful website is hope2sleep.co.uk. You will find lots of information there. Good luck
Hi pnut,
I am a CPAP user as I have been diagnosed with moderate level Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. This machine was supplied free and was set-up and is maintained through a sleep clinic.
I was referred to the sleep clinic by my GP, who firstly asked if I snored and went on to ask a few further questions to diagnose. I was sent a questionnaire called STOPBANG and after it was seen I was fitted with a recording oximeter. I was then invited to an overnight stay at the centre which finished with a diagnosis and a new CPAP machine. I am now monitored annually and the pressures are checked
Generally speaking a CPAP machine is a prescription only item. You can buy them but only with a prescription

David
Hi majestictime,
My Machine is an APAP (Automatic Positive Airways Pressure) machine and its brand name RESMED S9 Autoset and was supplied with a RESMED H5i which is a heated humidifier that attaches directly to the machine. The company is Resmed (UK) and they have a very good website realsleep.co.uk.
regards
David
DamienGal, my machine was supplied and setup by the NHS. The time taken to get the machine was not long. I was referred by my GP and was first asked to wear a Oxygen meter which recorded over 24 hours. When I took it back they told me that I would be seen by consultant and got an appointment 2 weeks later. Then referred to an overnight assessment which came about 2 weeks later and diagnosed moderate level and given a new CPAP machine. After a months trial got in touch and then given a BPAP since I had CO2 retention. Ever since no problems. Face masks are change every 6 months and filters supplied.
